Question about boating while pregnant...

I am 17 weeks pregnant today and this weekend we went to the lake with some friends of ours.  I went out on the boat with everyone on Saturday and then on Sunday and for the most part the ride was a very smooth ride except a few times with several other boats on the lake there were some bumps here and there.  I am a worry wart and am terrified of something happening...I got on the tube to go tubing for maybe 5 minutes which was very smooth also in a cove away from teh main lake but hit a couple bumps as well.  I knew enough was enough after all that and have had a bit of anxiety the last day or two about this...I've not had any weird pains, cramping, etc etc... just some worry.  Any encouragement/advice would be nice!

Re: Question about boating while pregnant...

  • Well it's a little late to be asking now, isn't it?

Well what do you want us to tell you? You went boating, tubing, and now you are worried.

Boating is fine when pregnant. It's really not that different than going over a speed bump or taking a hard landing on a runway while on a plane.  But I really don't know what you want us to tell you. Call your doc tomorrow if you are truly that worried.

And some of us have been around a long time and are inherently snarky. If you don't like it, then don't post, ignore us, or find another board.

  • I agree it is a little late now, but understand you are worried and looking for reassurance. I think boating is fine, but tubing? That's a little much at 17 weeks pregnant. I'm surprised you thought that was okay... I'm sure your baby is fine but if the cramping continues, call your OB. And take it easy! You are pregnant now so while that isn't a free pass to sit on your butt (unless directed to by a doctor) and you can be active, use common sense.

  • I would say that the boating is good, maybe not the tubing in the future. I would ask your doc about it though. Ignore the uncalled for remarks of those who have never done something and then had the oops thought! All in all I am sure you are fine and your body will definitely let you know when your over doing it! GL
  • To be honest, we were in such a private area of the lake and going at such a slow speed I wasn't really thinking I guess.  I have not had any cramping or anything...just was asking advice or if anyone else has been boating/tubing while pregnant.  I agree, though, the tubing part was probably a bit dumb but it was for about 5 minutes and I didn't get thrown off or anything.

  • I go boating so I know that is safe, and as long as it isn't crazy fast on the tube, your fine.....not dumb at all!
  • I agree that boating is fine. ?I wouldn't think twice about it. ?I just went this weekend as well with my 8 month pregnant cousin on a speed boat. ?I probably wouldn't go tubing just because I think it would be uncomfortable but if you were going very slow and they knew you were pregnant (so not to throw you off) I'm sure that is fine too. ?You aren't having any problems so I would try not to worry about it. ?I ran, played ultimate frisbee, biking, etc when pregnant. ?Your body is made to cushion the baby! ?Just because you are pregnant doesn't mean you have to sit on your butt all day unless you have some other complicating factors. ?Try to relax and enjoy your pregnancy. : )
  • I've asked my MFM about this.  He said if it is not busy than it is fine.   He suggested not going out when the water is rough such as the 4th of July weekend on any Lake.   Any time we are on our boat we go slow and try to avoid any bumps.  I would never go tubing or skiing while pregnant.  I hope everything turns out fine for you,

  • I went boating this weekend, too, and several other times since I have been pregnant and baby is just fine.

As for tubing, everything I have read and heard is that you shouldn't do any activity where water or air could possibly be forced into your vagina and ultimately into your cervix, such as water slides, water sking, tubing, etc.  If you didn't have any hard falls into the water then I would think you are probably ok, but I wouldn't risk it again.

  • I was boating over the weekend and didn't really think anything of it...I wouldn't worry about that at all.  I definitely wouldn't go tubing again though, too risky.

  • I was on a pontoon boat this weekend and went "tubing" also.  However, everyone on the boat knew I was pregnant and pontoon boats DO NOT go fast at all.  There were almost no bumps/waves and I was on the a seated floater... (not technically a tube) for only about 5 minutes.  It was more like they were pulling my hubby and I along behind the boat.  It wasn't exactly a high-impact or fast experience at all.  I felt fine and the driver of the boat understood that I wanted to participate, but safely.  So, as long as you weren't on a speed boat going anywhere over 15 miles an hour in super choppy waves and fell out, I'm sure you're fine.

  • I called my doctor's nurse today and she said boating is fine as long as it is not speed boating...she said that she would not recommend.  So that gave me some peace of mind.  Still definately regretting my dumb decision to get on a tube behind the boat but being that it was for only about 5-10 minutes and at a slow, calm speed because the driver knew i was pregnant with only maybe a couple bumps which caused me to stop I think I'm ok and I didnt get thrown off.  I've not had anything abnormal going on since then either.

  • DH's cousin went water skiing at 8 weeks pregnant and took a pretty big tumble as well...healthy baby boy was born in Feb. Although I would NEVER do this, I'm sure you are just fine.
