Healing a nipple scab???

One of my breasts has a hurrendous scab on it, thanks to some poor latching when my son was first born. I'm going to try keeping him to just the other side, and pumping the injured side, but does anyone have tips for helping it to heal FAST! I'm so sick of the pain, and my LO has enough BF troubles without adding my injuries to it....

Ugh, please tell me this gets easier... the only thing that has stopped me from giving up and going to formula is a feeling of guilt for taking the easy route, and the cost of formula.

Re: Healing a nipple scab???

  • I had a scab that covered half of my nipple during week one and I hear you girl, it sucked!  I tried to keep lanolin on it and keep it uncovered as much as I could to help it heal.  It healed much quicker than a scab on other body parts.

DS and I have had our fair share of troubles, but at week three we are settling into a groove that works for us.  At night it is till tough, so we are bottle feeding breastmilk during the times he doesn't want to work for his food and I am BFing him the rest of the time.  It's all about feeling comfortable with how you nourish LO and finding what works for him.  So good luck findng your groove.

One last encourager to keep you feeding LO BM, no one told me this, but the very few times LO had formula he spit up like crazy and it stained his cute little outfits.  I tried everything to get it out, but there are definately stains.  The little BM he has spit up has come right out of his clothes.  Just a little FYI

  • Ugh, I went through the same thing in the beginning. Newman's All-Purpose Nipple Ointment saved my life...it's a prescription and it's fabulous.

Yes, it get way easier. :)

  • I found a "cut" on my nipple yesterday.  I pumped on that side all day yesterday, put lots of lanolin on it, and as someone suggested on here, I put BM on it and let it air dry after I pumped.  Today it's feeling better and I have been able to nurse DS on that side.  Up until today, everytime he would latch I would almost be in tears because it hurt so bad.  I think the break for the day did wonders.
  • The lactation consultant that I go to told me to use 1%  Hydrocortisone and 1% Bacitracin ointment, after LO is done nursing put a small amount of both on your nipples. It helps!! My son was tongue tied when he was born which posed some latching on issues, until we had his tongue clipped my nipples were a mess!!! Good luck!!
  • I forgot to say in my above post, it gets easier!!  Keep your head up and DON"T give up, I found it helpful to go to a support group with other women and I met with a lactation consultant, she was a life saver!! My son is four months old now and he can latch himself on, you will get there!! Just relax!
