staph infection?!

So, we went on vacation and DS came back with a staph infection- on his diaper area and one spot on his finger that swelled up. ?He had diaper rash when we left, and the only place I can think he got it was in the lake. ?I feel soooooo guilty for not keeping him out of it, or for not doing a bath after every time he got wet, or worrying I didn't do whatever else I could have done. ?He's started antibiotics but I can tell he doesn't feel good. ?

Anyone's LO had a staph infection that never came back so I can stop freaking out? We are doing epsom salt baths, any other suggestions for keeping him comfortable? ?Also, I have to bandage the finger and he HATES it- any idea how to get him to keep a bandaid on??

Re: staph infection?!

  • What if you got some character bandaids (we havelmo ones).

no ideas about staph infections but I"m sure the epson salts are awesome---that stuff is great.

I hope he feels better soon!

  • Yes!

DS got one several months ago.  He was fine when I got him dressed that morning, spent the day with his grandparents, came home and was getting him ready for his bath and his entire chest was broke out with these puss filled bumps.

We ruled out anything new to eat or drink, possibility of him getting into something, knew I hadn't introduced new soap, lotions, or detergents so we figured it was doctor time.

That was on a Saturday night and by Monday morning, his chest looked worse.  It was a staph infection.  She gave us an antibiotic and it looked better within 36 hours of taking it and about 10 days later it was almost completely gone.  He hasn't had it since.

The only thing we have come up with as to how he got it was that he scratched his eczema and it became infected.

Good luck!  I hope it goes away soon!

  • My lo had a staph infection about 3 months ago and we haven't had another outbreak since (knock on wood).  Dr. told me that staph can be caught from anywhere (door handles, fruit, etc.....)  Did you do topical and oral antibiotics?

Don't feel bad! DD has had multiple staph infections in her diaper area. Her pedi said that most likely that she had a slight break in her skin from her diaper rash, and the bacteria from her poop / pee gets in there, and... boom! infection. There's nothing we can do to prevent it, except to try to potty train her as soon as we can. It's very possible that the lake had nothing to do with it, so stop beating yourself up!

Unfortunately no. DD's pedi told us that once someone has a staph infection, they are much more likely to get them again. She's had three in the past year or so.

There's a polysporin ointment that also says "pain relief" on the label. The polysporin doesn't do a whole lot to help staph (except make me feel better), but I do think when I used the pain relief formula DD seemed more comfortable.

DD PPs re: character bandaids. That's the only thing I can think of. The first time DD needed a bandaid, she hated it, until I pointed out the fishy (Nemo). So now I try to keep stocked in characters that she likes.

Staph infections suck. I really hope YS's goes away quickly & he never gets another one! That would be awesome!
