Sushi.......*sigh*

DH and I just got home from our anniversary dinner @ the sushi place & I must say that I was a little let down.  We usually go all out w/ the sashimi and of course can't do that now.  The cooked stuff just didn't do it for me.  Sigh.  Well bring on the pineapple wedding cake!  Hopefully it doesn't disappoint!  ;)

  • What about avocado rolls and cucumber rolls??? That's what I eat, just the vegetarian stuff. It's not cooked but it's not dangerous either. That way you kinda feel like you're eating what you want :)
  • When I was pg, my ob told me that sushi was fine, as long as it's from a reputable place.

It's totally a decision for you and your ob, but just thought I'd throw that out there.

  • Have you tried the shrimp tempura rolls? A local sushi place cooks those deliciously! Although I like the raw sushi, the tempura rolls will have to be my new fave while pg again.

  • I gotta say, I lived in Japan with my first 2 pregnancies and I craved raw sushi constantly. I went and ate it when I wanted, but in small amounts- instead of having 15-19 plates (only 2 pcs of sushi on each plate, small servings!) I'd enjoy only 8 or so. Never filled me up, but I'd leave that to the miso soup. :) Both my children came out fine, and my doctors told me as long as I didn't consume that much more than once weekly it was fine- mercury levels and all. If you feel that strongly about it, continue with the heated stuff. There's a place down the road from me that does cold and hot sushi, and the hot stuff is actually really good, but I know I'll be sneaking in a few plates of raw stuff too. Unagi Sushi (the cooked eel) is my favorite and completely harmless.

Well this gives me a bit of encouragement!  Thank You!  DH and I love to go to our special sushi place once every couple of months usually so it definitely wouldn't be an every week thing.  We did have some unagi tonight.  That & the spicy scallop are the only things that didn't disappoint.  I just don't do the fried stuff too well.  :)  Thanks again!

  • I miss sushi so much!!   Crying     I also heard that the seaweed can contain mercury. DH is very protective about what I eat. Maybe next time we go to the doctor together I should ask the dr.

I ate sushi about once a week last time. It's ok if it's fresh.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

unless you are eating a boatload of it, then it's not a big deal.

Before we got our bfp, but while I was pg, we ate at the Boiling Pot. I stuffed myself with crap, crawfish, shrimp, and some other stuff, and K didn't come out with gills. =]

But, again, it's all about what you are comfortable with.

  • My mother ate sushi with all three of us and we are all good.  I've had some already not a ton, but just enough to satisfy me, mostly veg rolls but one or two nigiri pieces and a few pieces of a cuke, avo and salmon roll.

My ob was also okay with it.  I was too afraid to chance it.  This pregnancy may be different, it's all I want to eat!

The dragon roll here is a bit different.  Still fried but it's a crab stick w/ cooked salmon, rice & seaweed deep fried which is not bad but then they put this mayo sauce on top and I want to lose my stomach.  :(

  • I avoided it last time, but I've already had it once this time. Agree with erbear that if it's fresh, it's okay. I'm more wary of mercury levels than the actual raw fish. That said, I do love unagi and tempura rolls, so last time I just ordered a lot of that.
  • DH and I just had our anniversary this past weekend (the 26th)! Congrats! And sorry about the sushi.... I miss a good ole Spicy Tempura Tuna Roll.

I know the feeling! But I'm happy to see so many of you out there uese common sense instead of panic.

Don't think I can ever give up on my avocado rolls!

  • I still eat sushi (raw) once a week. I avoided it in first tri because the risk of food poisoning at that point wasn't worth it to me, but my midwife okayed and said basically the risk is incurred during handling and would be like food poisoning. There are so many things they do in the US to make fish sushi grade (flash freezing, etc) that parasites etc are not a concern. She said just to eat from a place I trust. In the US, you're about 40 times more likely to get food poisoning from cooked chicken. I'll keep eating my sushi then : ) Many parts of the world keep eating raw fish during pregnancy...
