zofran and constipation

I know you can get constipation in early pregnancy...as well as late pregnancy, but since I started Zofran I seem to have a constipation problem.  Anyone else?  I have Crohn's Disease so this is a very scary position for me to be in.  Any advice?

Re: zofran and constipation

  • Plenty of fluids, I also snack on Mandarin oranges and dried apricots and take a colace and it helps.

  • For me it doesn't matter what I eat or drink I will go days and days w/o a BM. Not to mention my m/s is still bad that I can't drink tons of water or even think about prune juice.

You can try colace (my doctor gave me ok for up to 4 100mg a day but I'd ask them what you should take).

Then at my last visit the nurse said I could take a laxative. Just be careful not to overdo those : ) and be sure your nurse/doctor is ok with you taking one.

I take Peri-colace. It's colace with laxative in it, it works pretty good but not TOO well if you know what I mean and I don't have stomach cramps with it. But I don't normally take more than one a day.

  • I started having this problem after starting Zofran too. I was fine for the first couple of days and then went like a week without going (at least I think so... I couldn't remember for sure, especially with all of the all-day-sickness). I try to drink as much as I can, but it's hard with the nausea/vomiting. There is no way I can get prune juice down either. I'm going to talk to my doctor at my appointment on Thursday.
  • I have had super bad constipation since I started taking zofran. I have even upped my fluids and my fiber intake but nothing seems to work. I definitely think this is the big side effect from it.
  • I'm on Zofran as well, it helps keep the nausea down but not gone.

I've been not going no. 2 either, but I'm not sure that's to put down to to the zofran either. It could be, but it's hard for me to keep down water even with zofran. I try to eat or drink watery fruits like plums, peaches, watermelons, etc- whatever I have around the house (or try to keep stocked). The zofran keeps me from vomiting, but I still have to force myself to keep hydrated- it is NOT easy.

I hope you can get some help soon, I'm pretty clueless with Crohn's but it doesn't sound like a fate you need to tempt.

  • I am also having the zofran/constipation problem - big time!  I'm going to call my dr today and see if there is something stronger than colace that I can take.  I've tried fiber, water, fruits, colace and nothing seems to work.  If any of you find a solution, PLEASE let us know.

  • Constipation was a big problem for me with zofran, and I only needed 1 zofran a day to keep the nausea down. I eventually started to see a small softening effect when I would take 3-4 colase over the course of a day.

I'm 10 weeks now and haven't needed to take zofran in 2 days.  Perhaps your MS will get better soon too.
