Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Two questions about solids...

#1 - We recently started solids and are following the 3 day rule as our pedi recommended.  We've given him: butternut squash, bananas, sweet potatoes, apples, green beans and (today) peaches.

How long do we continue to offer foods with a 3 day waiting period before we can just give him whatever fruits and veggies we'd like?

#2 - Right now he is just getting 1 tsp. ONCE a day.  Any idea when we should offer him more in amount or if we should give it to him more than once a day?

Just trying to get some ideas before we have our 6 month appt. in about 2 weeks where I'll ask our pedi.  Thanks for sharing what you do!!

  • I plan on following the 3 day rule anytime I intruduce him to anything new through the first year.  We have our 6 month appt tomorrow and plan on asking for sure what he recommends.

  • Maybe I am being a "bad" mommy here, but I am not adhering to the 3 day rule. It isn't like I am ginving her any foods that are typically associated with allergies, so I am not worried. Sweet potato, applesauce, banana, pear, prunes, chicken, avocado, and peas so far.

DD isn;t too into eating real food yet, she gets a teaspoon max a day. I am just following her lead. babies at 1 year are still supposed to be getting something like 3/4 of their calories from breastmilk/formula anyway so there is a lot of time to build up to that.

  • You should always abide by the 3 day rule until about age 1.  Now obviously, different kinds of squash falls into the category of, squash is squash so ya don't have to wait 3 days in between each new "kind."

My LO started with just half a stage 1 jar, so 1oz of food once a day.  (We started at 4m though)  I hate to give this answer, but you could just tell when he was ready to start eating more.  I want to say that about two weeks into solids he was unhappy when we stopped feeding him so we continued to let him eat and he finished the whole jar.  :-)

Once we had finished getting through all the fruits and veggies, I started giving him a little fruit with his cereal first thing in the morning (after his bottle) and then his veggies with a little cereal around dinner time.  I gradually moved into 3 meals per day when he was giving me the "hungry" cry but wouldn't take a bottle in the mid afternoon.  I used to mix it up and give like half a jar of fruit and half a jar of veggie for lunch.

Good luck & have fun! Solids is a blast!

This is what happened to my daughter on day 4 of green beans, which isn't typically associated with allergies.

    Hey Buddy!

I was told to continue to do the 4 day rule until he has eaten everything.

Carter eats 3X a day. Breakfast lunch and dinner is a fruit or veggie mixed w/ oatmeal. He usually eats 2-3 containers of baby food a day. He eats a lot. He is a very hungry baby. His pedi. told me 3X a day. He is a little peanut so she told me to mix in the oatmeal w/ his food because there aren't that many calories in baby food. He also drinks 32oz. of formula a day.

    Hope this helps!
