Baby Names

What do you think of Derek/Derrick?

My 1st son name is Dylan and we're having another boy. We are thinking of another name that starts with D. For now we both agree on Derek. Which spelling do you like better Derek or Derrick?? Middle name suggestion?? TIA

Re: What do you think of Derek/Derrick?

  • Hmm, I think I like Derek a little better. Plus, then it'll even have the same number of letters as your first son's name, which is kind of neat-ish.

  • I'm very conscious of pronunciations, so, to me these are two different pronunciations: Dare-eck and Dare-ick, but I'm willing to admit I might be one of the few who pays attention to these subtleties.

I prefer Derek, which I think sounds more sophisticated, although I actually like the "look" of Derrick more.

  • I think Derek is better, I am biased though that is how DH spells his name.

  • Dislike, but I prefer Derrick.
  • Derrick is my brother's name.  His middle name is Maurice.

  • Derek!  Might want to check the SSA list to see which is more common.  I think I've known more Dereks than Derricks, but that may vary regionally.

I like the way that Dylan and Derek look together.

Due with DS2 on March 15, 2013! PLEASE vote on my BabyNames.com list! http://www.babynames.com/namelist/9692263
  • I like Derek too. As for middle names I think you should search the family tree a little for something meaningful. A few names in my family that we would consider for a future DS would be Thomas, William, Raymond, Emerson, Gregory, Patrick, David, John, Kevin and Brian. Good luck!

I would personally pronounce the two spelling the same.  In fact we have a Derek and a Derrick in my family (brother-in-laws), and we pronounce them the same....

    I like Derek spelling better.

  • Derek for sure.  Derek Michael sounds good!

Hmm, I'm not very good with boys names!

  • I like the Derek spelling better, it could be a biased vote though because that's the way my DH spells his. I like family names for middle names but here are a few suggestions. Derek James, Derek Conan, Derek Scott, Derek Joseph, Derek Michael, Derek Tyler.

Derek = First showed up on the SSA list in 1943, and is now at #170

Derrick = First showed up in 1948, and is now at #296

    So they're not too different.

I met a customer a while ago in his early 40's. He was either from England or Ireland. He said his name was this, and I asked how to spell it. (Thanks to this board, I've been asking that a lot lately!)

And he said very matter-of-factly, "The normal way." I said, "Um..." And he said "D-E-R-E-K".

So... according to one guy from across the pond, Derek is better (and I agree)!

  • I prefer Derek.

    Derek Matthew

    Derek Joseph

    Derek Ryan

    Derek Christopher

  • DH's name is Derek.

I always call him Derek Scott.
