I dont know about wishing it smelled like maple syrup because Id never be able to eat it again, but you are lucky! My pee has had a different smell to it though since being pregnant and I wouldnt say its pleasant....
I actually remember watching a medical show on TLC about a baby that had urine that smelled like maple syrup and it was something wrong. (Treatable, but wrong). You may want to ask your OB about it just to be safe.
There are various causes of sweet smell in the urine. Most are transient and due to metabolizing various foods. Sometimes strong odor is due to highly concentrated urine when one hasn't consumed enough water, easily fixed. Another cause is sweet smell due to uncontrolled diabetes melitus, which can be determined through urinalysis evaluated by a physician. There is a rare metabolic disease called Mapple Syrup Urine Disease , as the smell is like slightly burnt sugar - or for people who have actually smelt mapple syrup, that is apparently what the urine smell is similar to. The incidence of this illness is around one in 200.000 births, with the exception of a small intermarrying community of Northern European descent in the USA where the incidence is much higher. This neurological condition effects infants and children and would not present in adults. MSUD, as it is known, is a condition where the body can't deal with substances called branched aminoacids. One of these, called leucine is toxic, in particular to the brain. There are various types of the disease, symptoms range from brain disfunction and death in the newborn period to very mild indeed. Many children will have mental retardation, even if their MSUD is discovered early and the metabolic doctors that care for them put them on the special protective diet at a very young age. Some very fortunate children are known to have normal intelligence, this requires very good metabolic control throughout their lifetime.
Other causes of sweet smell in the urine are very rare indeed. One should have a talk with a doctor who specialises in metabolic medicine if one is concerned that urine smells very different to the usual. The tests to find out what is wrong and the methods to fix the problem are very complex.
I knew someone when I was a kid who had maple syrup urine disease - she had a crazy diet and was limited with certain activities but I don't remember it being life threatening or anything like that. I would DEFINITELY talk to your doc asap.

There's a hereditary Ashkanazi Jewish disease called Maple Syrup Disease and it causes the urine to smell like maple syrup. I suggest looking it up. GL

Mine actually did after eating Waffle Crisp cereal (the cereal smells like maple syrup). I never bought the cereal again after I looked at the sugar content. It was really good though.
Edit: After reading the PP's, I want to say that mine was a one time thing. OP- Was yours a one time thing or related to something you ate? I wouldn't worry if it was a one time thing.
Yeah, I'd mention it to your OB or PCP and bring up this Maple Syrup Urine Disease.
Maple Syrup Urine Disease is a genetic metabolic disease (of amino acid metabolism) with infantile or childhood onset. it's very rare - 1:185,000. don't worry, you'd have known in childhood if you had it.
I would wonder about Ketoacidosis though if it smells sweet... you did GD tests, right? I'm assuming you don't have gestational diabetes?
Re: pee smells like maple syrup?

Sweet-smelling urine may be the result of either glucose or ketone excesses in the urine.

So.. I think it's a good idea to mention it to your doc. It could be nothing, but it could also be a problem. Best to be safe. Gl

I would call the Dr.
The only time mine ever smelled like syrup was when I was taking fenugreek for milk production with DD. That's normal, though.

It has happened all day today.
I got an 87 on the Glucose tolerance test. My OB said if it was graded by letters I would have gotten an A++.
I will mention it at my appt tomorrow and see what he says. I will let you ladies know what happens.
