? for the EBFers

Were any of you told to start LOs on Vitamin D suppliments?

I just spoke to the PA at the Pedi's office (called for something completely unrelated) and she told me she'd like if we started Mari on Trivisol or D-visol (sp?), 1 ml/day because breastmilk doesn't really have enough vitamin D as she'll need.

Why is this the first time I'm hearing about this?

I'm also going to post this on 0-3 to see what kind of response I get there.

TY!

  • Yep, Alexa's pedi Rx'ed it from birth until 12 months since I EBF.

  • We had our meet & greet with the pedi the other night & he said that he recommends it if I'm going to BF.
  • Met with our ped on Tuesday and she didn't mention it directly but it was in the breastfeeding handout that they gave me for reference.  I figure I'll ask more questions about it when I get there.  It seems like the vitamin D doesn't transfer well from mom to baby or there's not enough of it to give baby what he/she needs.
  • Pedi didn't mention it but it was in a handout she gave me.  I have heard both ways on this, but I read that if baby gets out in the sun for 20-30 min/week in her diaper that gives her enough Vit D, or I think it said they need around 10-15 min/day if they go out fully clothed.  I am not giving them to her now, I am just going to try to get her in the sun a little every day.  If the pedi ever makes a big deal about it, I may do them.
  • I tried giving this to H, as recommended by our 1st pedi, when she was only a few weeks old.  She HATED taking it, plus it is so thick and syrup-y that I feel like she practically choked on it.

The new pedi said that she does not need it, and that was a relief since I had stopped giving it.  I didn't really like the concept of giving it to her anyways...call me what you will, but I am just a "naturalist" like that I guess.

  • We supplemented with the Trivitosol.  Vitiamin D is not passed through BM and is essential for healthy development.  There is conflicting reports advice on how much sun is okay with out sun protection and at what age.  Plus, sun exposure can be hard to come by in winter months in some areas.  It seems every magazine's health section (from Parents to Better homes and Gardens) has been talking about the new research being done on vitamin D and how everyone (babies and adults) need to be getting more than previous thought. (Especially since we are getting less from the sun than say previous generations) And since it is a water soluble vitamin, and using the proper dosage and included dropper and overdose and adverse affects are incredibly unlikely, I saw only pros and no cons in giving it to Lil Miss.
  • I asked about this at our 1 month Pedi Appt & he would like for me to take her on a 10-15 minute walk either before 10am or after 5pm to receive enough vitamin D, no need for supplements here (this may also be due to the fact that she had jaundice & sunlight helps, I'm not to put sunscreen on her when I take her out for these short bouts-FYI her legs are really the only exposure to sunlight).
  • I was told to give it to him from the day we left the hospital. He hates it and spits it out so he rarely gets any. I try to take him outside and let the sun his his arms for about 5-10 minutes every day.
  • Yes.  A study came out a few months ago with findings that most kids do not have enough vitamin D.  This is why you are seeing the push for vitamin D.
  • Yes here too.....we use Poly-Visol...It smells so nasty ughhhh.....I give it to her at night so her breath does not smell like it all day...
