Plugged Duct?

I think I have a plugged milk duct, however I don't really know.

It's not all that painful, but my right breast, about a half inch above my areola, up, is pretty freakin' hard and knotty.  I would think it was engorgement, but I just pumped to try to relieve it, and under my areola is now squishy, but the top is still really hard.

I noticied yesterday that that breast was very warm all day, but I didn't have the hardness I have today.  I thought it was weird, but now I'm figuring it has something to do with this.

I'm not really in pain, but I want to remedy this before it gets to that point if it is a plugged duct.  It's also not red...

How would I know?

PS - I have a heating pad on it right now to try to help the situation.

Re: Plugged Duct?

  • Each time I had a clogged duct it hurt- A LOT.

I would keep doing what you're already doing with the heat and massage, maybe even adding in a loooong HOT shower.  I could be wrong here, but I would think that pain would be the red flag to call the doc, and they would probably put you on a antibiotic in that case.

  • Although I have never had a clogged duct YET...it kinda sounds like one..But I agree with Carollyn, I would wait until it hurts before you call the Dr. because what you are doing may make it go away.....Oh the joys of breast feeding.....I swear if it was not so good for these LO's I would have stopped a long time ago lol...
  • I was lucky enough to have mastitis over the weekend (and still getting over it), but doing much better. Definitely don't let it get to bad if you start to get flu symptoms you could be getting it. I read that wet heat is better then dry heat so shower/warm compress vs. the heating pad. I was told to rotate warm compress and ice pack. Take some ibuprofen and avoid baby wearing.  I took a 2-3 mile hike wearing Alexa and that is when things turned from bad to worse since my boob was being compressed.

  • I had chronic clogged ducts due to oversupply issues.  DO NOT sit on this one- it can go from bad to worse fast.

If you have a pump, pump every hour- or, try to get Mari to nurse on that side exclusively (and pump and build your stash with the other side)  use wet warm compresses like suggested, pressure from the shower and rest!

  • No advice, but I hope you feel better soon!
