Babies: 9 - 12 Months

infants and aspartame

The pedi suggested yogurt as a good transitional food. She said we could even try the flavored ones. I see that some say "contains aspartame". Is this safe for my 9 month old? Or should I go to the extent of looking for sugar free yogurts (if they make that)??

Re: infants and aspartame

  • I personally avoid all artificial sweeteners for myself and my kids.  It seems like every time  a new artificial sweetener comes out that's supposed to be safe, after a few years reports come out about something being wrong with it, so I just avoid them altogether.  Stonyfield farms never uses artificial ingredients, so you might want to use their products.  Also, it's recommended that you give babies full fat yogurt instead of low or non fat.  The easiest way to do that is to get yo baby yogurt, although that has some added sugar.  Stonyfield also offers large containers of plain yogurt in whole, low, or non fat, so we have always just kept large containers of that (now we use non fat for all of us, but until she was 2 I gave her full fat) and add in fruit purees or apple sauce or nothing depending on what she's in the mood for.

  • Aspartame is a sugar-free, artificial sweetener.  Thus if yogurt has aspartame, it is "Lite" or sugar-free.  I would not feed anything artificial.  Try YoBaby from Stoneyfield Farm.  They are lightly sweetened with organic cane sugar, but are still lower in sugar than adult yogurt.  They are also made with whole milk, since babies need that extra fat.

  • my pedi recommended yo baby yogurt.  i would not give DS artificial sugar.
  • I would skip those and go with the natural yogurts.  Maybe get plain yogurt and mix fruit in with it.
  • I would be really cautious about giving artificial sweeteners to your LO.

I think most of the baby/toddler yogurt is usually regular sugar (if flavored).  That's what we use, I don't really give her "adult" yogurt unless that's all I have because all of it that I've found either has aspartame or HFCS.

They're basically saying that plain whole milk yogurt is best for babies.
