Babies: 0 - 3 Months

taking baby out and about

Ok so my daughters Dr said wait 6 weeks besides stuff that you must do- like food shopping.. I have friends who took their babies out at a few days old and think im nuts for following what the Dr said. I just started going on more errands with her but 1 a day and only to places i think won't be packed with people.. (she's 5 weeks tomorrow)..anyone like me- or is your baby going everywhere??

Re: taking baby out and about

  • I take Lily everywhere. I've been to family parties, grocery shopping, baby group, visiting work, friends houses etc. Unless your daughter was in the NICU or has any other underlining risk factors, I would go for it. I like my little outings, they keep me sane and ensure that at the very least my teeth get brushed on a daily basis lol

  • Mine goes everywhere, but not everyday. We had multiple doc appointments and other errands starting at 1 week old, and there was just no way around it. To make it a little better, I carried LO in the Moby, and made sure anyone who touched/held him washed their hands. I wouldn't take him out two days in a row, and would try to limit the trips to a couple hours tops. Our pedi only told us to avoid super crowded places like malls or church. HTH!
  • She goes everywhere. It wouldn't be fair to my 3 year old to be stuck in the house for 6 weeks.

  • We have been out and about a lot since about 2 weeks.  She spends most of the time in her Moby though so that does help limit the amount of people who are temped to touch her or get to close.  Personally I was going absolutely stir crazy and had to get out, so we go to walks to various neighborhood stores and places everyday now just to keep me sane.

  • I take LO everywhere and always have. I even let people get near him.

This. Even crowded places like the mall. She'll have a good immune system.
  • I asked my doctor about this, HE said the 6weeks rule is old school and hasn't proven to help keep the babies from getting sick. Hunter has been out and about almost every day since 4wks. It may just be a walk for an hour or maybe a whole day out and about..

On the other hand... I do not let people touch him or hold him unless I know them. Family is ok, but strangers.. No way... I never know what they have or where they have been. Just my thoughts.. But he'll be out and about in his car seat or in my arms almost every day. It will help with the transition to daycare too if you are going back to work.

I took DD out early and often just to maintain my sanity, but I wouldn't let anybody touch her.  Just remember that before 8 weeks your LO hasn't had many vaccinations yet.  That was my biggest concern.

  • I take her anywhere I have to go - Walmart, the grocery store, the mall.  I took her into work a week ago and let everyone hold her.  I figure it's no different than when a billion people visited us in the hospital (I actually work at the hospital I delivered at).  But I haven't had any strangers touching her.

  • We have been everywhere. Out on errands and recently to a festival. I might stay in more, but I have a 3 1/2 year old and it's not fair to keep her cooped up, plus I see it as unnecessary to keep the baby cooped. She is safe in her carseat and no one has tried to touch her. It also makes me feel normal to get out of house. I get stir crazy otherwise and don't want to miss out on summer!

  • We went out and about at off times for the first couple weeks; after that, we've been anywhere anytime.  Thankfully, Riley's been fine.
  • I go out every single day. It's to maintain MY sanity. I've been doing it since Lucas came home at just over 3 weeks.

  • I'm keeping my preemies home for at least 6 weeks. They are only going out for walks in the neighborhood, pedi's office, and grandparents' houses. Their immune systems are too weak to be around lots of people (born at 34 w, 5 d)

I would feel REALLY stupid if one got sick and had to be hospitalized just because I wanted to wander the aisles of Target.

    This.

I mean, I live in Beijing, so there's not really anywhere I can go where there aren't tons of people around.  I've even brought her to the local market, with hanging cows and pigs and live fish flopping about.

  • I took the baby out at about 1-2 weeks, if I remember correctly. Definitely before 6 weeks. Usually I had someone to help me :P
