need long nap tips

Ladies, my Thomas sleeps well at night.  As of matter of fact, he had is first STTN last night.  He slept 6 hours straight.  However, during the day he doesn't nap longer than 20 minutes at-a-time.  Do you ladies have any advice/tips for longer naps?

Hmm...how long between the time he wakes and the time you are putting him down again?  I usually let B stay up no more than 90 minutes from the time she woke up last...or as soon as she starts yawning, we are back upstairs.  We try to follow an Eat, Play, Sleep routine, which works well most days.

  • Sabrina naps like ass at daycare but on the weekends, she still takes long naps... well, at least one long (2 hours!) nap. But I attribute that to .. the swing. Yes, she naps in the swing and does her best napping there. I have a feeling it's going to be a sad day in our home when she outgrows that swing which was worth ten times more than what it cost. ;)

  • In between he's usually up 60-90 minutes then down for a short nap.  I've tried everything, playing with him, swings, but he just won't sleep longer than 20-30 minutes.  Maybe he's just a short napper, which is fine.  I'm not complaining because he sleeps well during the night.  I thought maybe there was something you ladies do that I don't.

Do you try white noise, and/or room darkening shades?  Could be he is just not a "napper"!

  • Sounds like Thomas is like my LO.  She sleeps 6 hours at night, but then takes cat naps all day long.   She will only stay down about 20 - 30 minutes at a time.  I've learned to leave her wherever she sleeps - swing, car seat, play pen - because as soon as I move her, she wakes up.  The only trick that works so far is to turn off the lights, which makes it fun to work - lol.  Since she sleeps all night, I'm willing to take the cat naps........
  • Aaron is not a good napper, either.  When he was little, the only way he'd sleep for long periods was in the car seat (which made his brachycephaly worse) and in the K'tan sling.

Now he generally will nap for 45-90 minutes (usually 45), which I'll take.  At night he STTN most of the time (from 8:30 pm to 6:30 am).

I'll second the swing as a fab creation and something I'd buy over again!  We don't get 2 hour naps in it, but it is often great for the last nap of the afternoon when she's really getting tired and cranky and doesn't want to sleep.  If I put her in her crib for her 3rd nap, she'll go nuts, but in the swing she's happy, even if she doesn't always sleep much.

DD naps for about an hour most naps - we use a shorter bedtime routine for each nap.  A little rocking, a song or short book and plunk her into the crib.  Before she rolled, I'd often swaddle loosely in a blanket.

I have no advice. My Mikey was a horrible night sleeper and a bad napper, then he just kind of got better at both around 6 months.

He's going through a bit of a regression at night right now, but is a creature of habit with the naps: #1 almost exactly 2 hours after he wakes up then 1 or 2 in the afternoon.
