Chickenpox like rash, but not chickenpox??!

My friend's little girl had gotten a rash that the doctor thought sounded like chickenpox over the phone (didn't want to see her) on Monday night. We'd just played with her (and other friends) earlier that day, so my friend let us all know that the ped thought it was chickenpox. Her daughter had no fever, but the rash was itchy. However, they never blistered over but is now going away. One of our other friend's little girls now has the rash.... WDYT this is? I've tried googling (LOL) but have no clue what else it could be based off what I have found.

I know no one here is a doctor, but I'm just curious if you may know or if your kids have had something similar. TIA! Smile

  • roseola? Is it only on the trunk or everywhere?

  • Mitch has it right now.  Bumps all over.  He is vaccinated for chicken pox, so I don't think its that, plus we have had a cold/virus going around our house that all of us have had.....Tay had Fifth Disease last week, but that rash is the lacy type, plus slapped check rash on her face.  Audrey has an ear infection and pink eye, but no noticable rashes.  Mitch doesnt think they itch or anything, so who knows though.

  • Why would you think it's not chicken pox?

They can get the pox even if they've had the vaccine-- it's just a very mild case. DS had all of his vax, and still got a mild case of chicken pox at 18 months.

  • chicken pox is usually in clusters ... usually starting on the trunk, not always though... starts as a flat red rash, then blistery, then crusty....  usually you'll have patches in different phases of the virus.  many times children have a fever .

check out chicken pox on google images.

if there's no blistery/crusty going on... then it may be something else...a  contact dermatitis or another virus. ?

I know that they can still get a mild case of chickenpox even if they've been vaccinated, but these aren't even blistering or crusting over but just going away. I was just thinking that for that reason alone, it didn't sound like chickenpox.

  • also - chickenpox usually takes about a week to show up, and definitely looks like blisters which then scab over.
  • I don't think it is chicken pox because they aren't itchy, he's been vaccinated, he isn't running a fever, has other cold like symptoms, they aren't crusty/scabby...just red dots all over his body, legs and torso mostly.  He hasn't been around anyone with chicken pox. The girls aren't catching whatever he has.

Maybe i"m in a grumpy mood because I'm tired, but I always hate on here when you have to justify what you believe because you haven't gone into every single little detail and someone is an "expert" and from the one sentence you have given, they assume they know better than you do.

All I'm saying is there are other rashes that do look similar to the pox that it could be.

I agree with this.  DS was vaccinated too but still got a very mild case of the chicken pox.

The rash is mostly on her trunk and back, but she has a couple on her cheeks, arms and butt as well. She has not had any fever, so we're not thinking that that's it.

What about strep?  That is really going around where we live.  If you do a google image search for "strep rash", a bunch of images will show up.  Strep with a rash is AKA Scarlet fever.

I didn't read all the replies yet to see what all the symptoms are, so sorry if I missed something.  Here is a link:

ETA:  I just went back and read the replies.  A strep rash is accompanied by a fever, so that doesn't sound like what it is.
