We found out last week that we're having a surprise in late January. We weren't planning to even talk about another baby until next spring, but apparently there are other plans!
My question regards working mothers who are also teachers. How/when did you let your supervisors know you were going to be out on maternity leave AGAIN? I just was offered a half day position with the school I've taught at for 6 years and I think they'll be really excited - but I also feel a little guilty for having to take time off 2 years in a row. Any suggestions? Part of me wants to wait until August to tell when school starts back, but I know I'll be in 2nd tri by then and probably already showing.
Glad to join your board and look forward to getting to know you guys!
Re: Joining the board - and a ?
I held off telling longer this time. I am a professor and took the spring semester off last year to have DD1. With DD2, I told my boss and his response was, "Again?". He wasn't mad or anything, but it isn't exactly convenient.
DD2 was due at almost the end of the semester, so I only missed two weeks plus finals. Knowing this, I came to my boss with a plan. I detailed exactly what I would do to get my students through those last two weeks. He likes employees that are not going to make his life more difficult. So outside of his fear of my water breaking at work and having to deliver my baby, I took care of everything else that he could have concerned himself with.
It's a different environment if you teach in K-12, but I would go into it with that approach. Have a plan and make it as easy on them as you possibly can.
