We only have one pieces for DD. But for a kid who is in the process of potty training, I see the logic. A wet one piece takes 8 years to get off, and by then it may be too late.

My girls wear both one pieces & bikinis. I think they are great for potty trained girls. My dd likes being able to go potty herself. There is also many tasteful bikinis & tankinis, imo. If you think my daughters look "wrong" then that's your problem, not mine. I think they look good in anything I put on them.
Here is what I don't get about them on a baby or toddler. The purpose of a bikini top is to hide developed breasts. When you put one on a baby or toddler it just looks ridiculous, because there are no breasts there to hide. Just looks silly to me. Why not just let the baby go without a top??
I agree with your unpopular opinion. I don't think kids should wear bikinis at all until they get to be like 14/15 yrs old. LOL.
However, I'm sure there are some out there on the market that are a little more tasteful...I just haven't seen any. When I was a child, I had a bikini in which the two pieces were sort of attached and the top was more of a "tank" style---I would be ok with my toddler wearing something like that.

I agree with this...they just look silly on babies/toddlers to me. Maybe just NMS.
I totally 100% agree with you. I think they sexualize children and they are so, so wrong. DD has plenty of tankinis that come down longer so they almost look like a little dress. They are great for diaper changes.
DD wears both bikins and one pieces. Nothing skimpy (see pic below) but when she was younger we quickly realized how much easier it is to change a diaper or have her go to the bathroom when not having to remove and put back on a wet/sandy one piece suit.
Meh. I will never put my DD in a one piece, or at least not for a long time. It is a PITA to change diapers in one, then when they are pottytraining a 2 piece is easier, and then when they are trained it's nice for them to be able to pull up/down alone. She wears tankinis, so nothing sexualized, but two piece bathing suits are WAY easier to deal with.

holy crap i agree. i don't think they are all about sexualizing a kid or anything, but the whole purpose of a bikini is to show of a woman's body. i don't get the purpose of the tops either. oh wells. they totally creep dh out though, so it'll be all one pieces or tankinis for Emma girl
eta: agree on the diaper changing thing. my point is toddlers don't need tops. oh wells.

exactly this! if diaper changes are the issue (which i completely get), why not just put a bottom on them?
Honestly, before I had a toddler, I sort of thought the same thing.
Now, I think that was completely silly. I think they're adorable, practical, and not at all sexual. At least not any of the baby bikinis I've seen. Maybe we shop in different places, IDK, but I think they're very cute with little ruffles and such. DD has a one piece, a tankini, and a ruffle bikini, and not once have I thought, "OMG, she totally looks like a slut."
Me too! I don't get, at all, this line of thinking that it's "wrong" or "inappropriate." Good Lord, do your toddlers wear shorts or tank tops either because they do "show off" their legs, backs and shoulders. Man, this is soooooo weird to me...
Okay, I have to pop back in. I think they are super cute on little girls and there is nothing inappropriate about them. I find it funny that it is always the moms of boys spouting this off, lol.
And I give the side eye to anyone who looks at a little girl in a bikini and thinks she is being sexualized. For you to come to that conclusion is odd to me. I see little girls in two pieces and think they look so stinkin' adorable.
I do agree with AW that they are really useless in a sense but they come as two pieces... might as well use them both!

So you would be ok with girls running around topless instead of wearing a bikini top? I think of it more as covering her nipples and her boob area, not her developed breast. There are adults who never developed but still would cover up that area.

Yes, I am OK with a little girl (I'm assuming were talking about toddlers here) running around without a top on.
I have 3 girls and none of them have a one piece, usually we go for tankinis or tops that are a little fuller. I have yet to find a one piece for my oldest that fits her right since she was a toddler. If I want to have her butt covered and not hanging out the side she must have a 2 piece that I can buy separate so I can get a size that covers her butt but isn't too big on top. It is getting harder since she is so tall for her age (wears a size 14 but is only 8).
I think they are cute as long as they aren't the little string bikinis. While in diapers and potty training I don't want to deal with taking the whole thing off.

To me it's a modesty issue. I think more people at the pool and beach would give me the side eye if DD was wearing only the bottom half.
Ok I don't really understand the arguments against a bikin in this thread. Personall, I'd rather have my 2 year old little girl wear a bikini, than my 14 year old because I am positive there would be more people looking at her in a sexual way than my two year old and that is disturbing to me. I also think the argument about bikini tops being there to cover developed breasts is very random. So aren't shirts there to cover developed breasts as well? Why do girls ever wear shirts? Skirts are certainly seen as sexual on women, but are those ok on toddlers? tank tops? Heck, why do we dress are kids in anything? We might as well just let them all be in diapers all the time. So wierd. Also coming from a girl who practically grew up wearing bathing suits (because we had a pool and lived in Miami) I definitely chose two pieces because I HATED peeling off a wet one piece to go to the bathroom.
There's a fine line between cute and trashy-looking, IMO.
Cute...
Trashy...
bwhahaha trashy? really? a 2 year old can be trashy? mmmmaybe adults should start realizing that children are just children -- no matter what they wear. so who cares what bathing suit they have on?

Seriously! You cannot sexualize a toddler with a bathing suit people! :: sigh ::
I guess my mom was trying to raise me to be a sluut then, because we used to run around with bikini bottoms and no top. My flat little boobies were exposed! I was such a wh*ore as a baby.
Seriously, I am NOT at all a fan of sexualizing little girls and DD has the most little girl/baby clothes you could imagine and I don't have a bikini for her yet because I was waiting until she was potty trained...but I think they're completely okay. Aren't some of these people some of the same ones that said they were okay with dance recital costumes and cheerleading routines because "that's what they do around here"? Those things sexualize their girls to no end, yet they think it's okay to do it. I see nothing at all sexual about a baby or little girl in a two piece bathing suit, unless they happen to be gyrating or thrusting their baby hips by the pool.
Diapers changes with sand and sticky bathing suits are a nightmare to begin with....if a two piece bathing suit makes it as easy for me to change DD as it would the mother of a boy....then I'm doing it! If you don't like the way playful, sweet girls look in bikinis...then I think that's a problem that the looker has to deal with, not the baby or the Mom.

you're worried about your not even 2 year old's modesty, but have her in a bkini? this makes no sense to me. she's a baby, she doesn't have breasts. at this point there's not no distinction between her and a little boy except genitals. this is bizarre and further proof society has fvcked up a lot of our sensibilities.

Amen Punk!! Calling a toddler trashy because she is in a pink ruffled swimsuit/bikini is crazy, just like a lot of people in this thread. I guess there will always be those people who like to tell others how to parent and think their way is best.

It would be even better if she could wear them with a bikini.
Re: ick - toddler bikinis
Then don't look at my siggy
My sister bought it for DD last year and it makes putting on the swimsuit/diaper changes much easier than her one pieces we have.

This. We only did one pieces last year and I hated diaper changes...especially at the beach with sand, etc.
The one is my siggy is my favorite one, and I got it at Gymboree with my Gymbucks. However, DD does have about 6 bathing suits and they are a mixture.
I totally agree

The prints they have for girls bathing suits are so freaking adorable! That's why I buy one piece suits for Casey, so I can see more of the cute print
Personally i go for the tankini's because of the better coverage from the sun.. i also prefer the little surf rash guard shirts for this..
i think the bikinis are cute & i don't think they sexualize, but they are just pointless and require more sunsreen!
i don't think one pieces are practical on young children... unless you are talking about just bottoms.
the top just completes the outfit. i don't see the big deal.
