Parenting after a Loss

Constipation...(baby)

Tony's been having really bad constipation.  He SCREAMS when he has to poop! Sometimes he gets it out..and other times he doesn't.  I feel so bad for him.  The Pedi told me to give him glycerin suppositories(not too often because he will become reliant on them) and Mylecon drops.  I'm breastfeeding exclusively and I've changed my diet to see if I can find the problem..I don't know what else to do!

Anyone have this problem and found a solution?  or any thoughts/advice?

TIA

Re: Constipation...(baby)

  • is the poop actually hard when it comes out?  or he is just fussy and straining?

if he is just fussy and straining - totally normal.

if he is actually having hard stools - that is very unusual for a breast fed baby.

I agree! My baby does not poop without some straining and fussing. Sometimes he does better if I put him on his tummy to work it out.

No...it's yellow and loose! So it's normal poop for a breastfed baby.  I just feel really bad when he's SCREAMING in pain pooping.

Maybe I shouuld try putting him on his tummy...WITH MY supervision of course! haha!  But is it normal for them to be constipated a few days at a time.  I mean...shouldn't he be pooping more? Especially if it's loose?

It will get better.  I promise.  He's just getting used to these weird sensations.  Gentle tummy rubs, warm bath, tummy time, bicycle legs, etc.

From what I've read and been told, it's not constipation if it's loose. Young babies strain and grunt when they poop. If it's not hard stool, then it's not constipatin and you're fine. He sounds perfectly fine. Just keep doing what you're doing.

Yes, if it's hard it's constipation; if it's loose when it comes out, he's fine.  My baby does not poop every day.  She often goes 3-4 days between poops and once went an entire week.  The doctor said this is totally normal for breastfed babies and not to worry unless it's hard when it comes out.

  • Kaygan had that exact same problem. Our pedi had us give her a little Apple-Prune juice mixed with equal parts water...worked like a charm. One bottle with 2oz juice and 2oz water every day fixed the problem like a charm!
