Baby Poo Smells Like Ammonia!

The smell just started yesterday. Other than that he seems totally normal. DS is EBF, including bottles of pumped, fresh and defrosted, milk at daycare.

Has anyone experienced this? Have any ideas?

Dr. Google didn't have much info on this one. I read it could have something to do with teething or a metabolic disorder Huh? but there really weren't any reputable sources.

If I don't get reasonable answers, and the next poo still smells, I'm going to call the pedi, but I thought I would check with you brilliant ladies first.

TIA!

  • Are you sure it's his poop and not his pee? Pee can have an ammonia smell to it...

  • I'm pretty sure it's the poop. He's had wet odorless diapers since and 3 ammonia-smelling poop ones.
  • The only thing that I could think would be a metabolic issue, but I would think that would have shown up by now or his newborn screenings would have picked it up. I would definiately speak with your pedi about it, though. If it was a metabolic issue, you would want to get it figured out ASAP.
