tips on introducing bottle??

So I am BF now and have just started pumping to build up my supply.  I am anxious to get LO to take a bottle, in the event I need more than two or three hours away from her.  Does anyone have any good tips before I start?

Re: tips on introducing bottle??

  • Don't wait until your LO is super hungry, I did that and it was a massive fail.  You just have to keep trying and be really really patient, it took me FOREVER to finally get her to take one.  Oh and then you have to find a bottle that they will take.  DD will drink out of the Born Free bottles and the Adiri Natural Nurser, but that's it!

  • I would say the most important thing is to make sure you have a great supply, and LO's latch is perfect. If those are covered, then that's all you really need to worry about. We introduced a bottle last week with no issues whatsoever. We didn't follow any of the things people suggest - I was in the room, DH did NOT wear/use my clothes to have my smell, etc. He just offered it to him, he took it, no issues. GL!

  • We waited until 5 weeks to intro. a bottle just to make sure that BFing was well established and he had no problems taking the bottle.  He prefers the breast, but he'll take the bottle.

We have to burp between ounces or it will all get spit up.

And I hate to say this, but DH is not very patient when it comes to feeding DS.  For some reason he thinks DS should be able to slam down 4 oz without thinking about it.  If one of you is an impatient person, have the other do the introducing of the bottle.

    Good luck!
