2nd Trimester

Thoughts on Zofran

My doc gave me a Rx for Zofran (well, the generic) because I am still nauseous everyday, all day especially after I drink anything. Anyway, I took it last night and I actually ate a full dinner and then asked DH to make me pancakes after dinner and drank a bunch of water. Normally, I cannot eat or drink anything in the evening the nausea is so bad! It feels nice to enjoy food again. It worked so fast I was wondering if it was just a placebo effect ;)

I was wondering if any of you ladies are still taking it, did it work for you and what side effects you've had. Also, did you take it every day, twice a day or just when you started feeling nauseous? I guess I am still a little nervous about taking an Rx...I don't even take tylenol for the headaches, but I am getting concerned the nausea is keeping me from getting enough hydration.

Re: Thoughts on Zofran

  • I took it a few times, but honestly I wasn't a fan of the side effects from it.  It made my already bad constipation alot worse.  I really only took it when I was going somewhere, and couldn't get sick.   My doctor prescribed the dissolvable kind that tasted like peppermint.

  • I took Zofran for all of 1st tri.  I still carry my bottle with me just in case.

I was taking 4mg 4x a day.   On the bad days, my dr. told me it was okay to take 8mg 4x a day.

As far as side effects, constipation like I've never experienced before was the only side effect I really had.  Colace is your friend, along with adding extra fiber to your diet.

  • i take 8mg a day.  I was taking 8mg 2 times a day but finally was able to stop the night one.  I've been taking it for practically the entire pregnancy.

It didn't work at first (but I have hyperemesis and nothing worked except IV zofran and IV fluids) but works now.  And I have to take it or else I would be vomiting all the time and not able to keep anything down (fluids or solids).  I didn't like the idea of taking it all the time, but the pros outweigh the cons.

And the only side effect I have is constipation...major constipation

  • I took it every day from 7 weeks to 21 weeks, and then every other day until 24 weeks.  It was a life-saver in the beginning but I was definitely glad to stop taking it.  Even though my ms never really went away (I still throw up a couple of mornings a week), it improved enough to where the side effects of the Zofran were more unpleasant that the morning sickness--and by side effects I mean constipation!
  • I was given a prescription for the disintegrating tablets.  It worked the first couple of times and then stopped.  All it was really doing was giving me bad constipation which made me feel even more sick.  I was put on Phenergan which worked a lot longer even though it made me really tired.  But then I started getting headaches, so I stopped taking that.  But by the time I did, my m/s had gotten a lot more bearable to the point where I was just using natural remedies.

  • I took it during my 1st tri. and just thought it was okay.  It worked well the first week or two of my morning sickness, but once it got a little worse it didn't work very good.  I still felt sick most of the day.  Then I was given a different rx, but never used it because a week later my morning sickness was just gone, that was probably one of the best days of my life.

  • Thanks everyone! I think I am seeing a trend in side effects. I think I will only take it when I absolutely have to. Thanks for the advice!

My doc also said something about taking Unisom at night? Is this a better alternative?

  • I take it every day still, I have no constipation, but I also only take it once a day at this point. I will say for me it was a life saver in my first pregnancy and also with this one, i was throwing up 10-12x a day without it and couldn't keep anything down.

At this point I'd love to take it on an as needed basis but its not in the cards.

My OB recommended taking vitamin B6 (not with the unisom).I've heard others recommend B6 with Unisom as well, it made me feel 100xs worse.
