Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Would this rash concern you?

I'm pretty sure that DS has been working on some teeth off-and-on for several weeks.  He's not a huge drooler, but his chin seems to almost always be wet.  Over the last few days, he started developing a rash that has progressively gotten worse.  It looks a lot like red pimples on his chin and a bit on the bottom of his cheek.  He had a fever yesterday and seems to have a bit of a rash on a lot of his body (this has happened before after a fever).  I also noticed some of what seemed like dry skin on his arm, kind of near his wrist several days ago and put some Aquaphor and other cream on it, then forgot about it.  He was sort of grabbing at it today, saying, "Boo-boo."  It was a lot more red, kind of like eczema.  I put Aquaphor on that and his chin before his nap.  It seemed to get worse as the day went on though.  I put unscented Aveeno on both rashes tonight.  I'm just wondering if I should be more concerned about them.  Do you think since he has the other rash scattered around his body that the virus might have just made these other 2 a lot worse?  He was home today, but will be going to daycare tomorrow.  I'm worried they're going to say he can't stay, even though I am doubting it's contagious.

  • No. Clay is a huge drooler and he has had that same rash for about 9 months straight. It gets much better if we slather a thick cream like Eucerin on it at night and first thing in the morning. I think it's mostly due to the being covered in saliva and then having them swipe at it all day long.

  • I'm not sure about the other rash and the fever, but DD has had that same kind of rash on her chin for about a week.  We think she's working on her two year molars because she's been drooling more than usual and her chin is constantly wet because of it.  I've been using Aveeno on it too and it is just now fading.  But, there were a few days where it looked horrible (and very painful) and didn't seem to respond to the Aveeno at all.  I would imagine that the chin rash your DS has will eventually respond to the Aveeno too.

  • DS has gotten yeast before under his chin and around his neck from drooling.  It's red and bumpy.  We took him to the doctor and got some Rx cream for it (nystatin).  There are some OTC creams that you could use too (lotrimin), but I would probably call before putting that so close to his face.

I don't know about the fever.  How high was it?  DS has gotten heat rash before from fevers.  I also never believe that teething causes a fever higher than 99 or so.  So I would look into seeing the pedi if that continues.

  • Does he have anything on his back? Scaly like? Any ringworm type circles?

I took DD to the pedi because I thought she had a ringworm on her buttcheek.... Pedi said Yep its ringworm !! Told me to put some Lotrimin on it for a month. :( Ohhh No i've failed as a mother.

Took her back to the pedi because it looked like it was getting bigger and she had one on her arm, and on her tummy. (This was 3 weeks later)

It wasnt ringworm !! it is Roseala or something like that. (she showed me in her medical book) it is associated with a fever and passing virus, takes 4-6 weeks for it to fully take it course. The rash on her back takes on a christmas tree shape (weird I know)

When she pulled out the black light ( I had already researched and was about to flip if I saw a bunch of glowing circles )

For your own sanity, take him to the pedi if he seems to be bothered by it.  Also just in case daycare gives you any problems about it being " contagious" in our case her rash was not.

  • The fever only lasted for a day and was probably never higher than 102.  I also don't think he would have a fever that high from teething.  I am going to leave a message for his doctor tomorrow.  I wasn't even thinking it could be yeast.

No, I'm pretty sure it's not ringworm.  Most of his rash on his body consists of tiny red dots - almost like a heat rash.  The bumps on his chin and his arm look like more to be concerned about.

Yeah, it could possibly be Roseola, but I think the fever for that usually lasts longer than a day.

DS had a fever for a day or two, and then had a rash all over.  We took him to the pedi and he said it could either be Roseola or a heat rash.  It didn't really matter because there wasn't anything we could do for either and by then the Roseola wasn't contagious.

I'm guessing the chin rash and the fever aren't connected.  Also, sometimes when DS teethes, he gets ear infections.  If the teeth are coming in on the top, that can cause inflammation that will keep the fluid that builds up in the ears and will cause ear infections (I doubt I'm explaining it right.. but it's possible).

The rash on his arm couldn't be eczema, could it?  That can be from dry skin OR an allergic reaction.  Have you introduced any new foods?  I've known some kids to get eczema on their arms from food allergies.

Either way, I hope he feels better and you can get it figured out!
