What are the odds - RE: Hiring a pregger

I need to get off my job...like, now.

I am so sure that no one is going to hire a pregger...and then there is the issue of me potentially not being paid while on maternity (or FMLA not kicking in until 12 mos. of employment)...

Like, I know I should stay put, but I feel like I can be cut at any moment.  I am now the only a rm without a release...not good.  I fee like, if I can make it to maternity, that the day I am supposed to return, they will cut me.

Everytime I have a kid, it puts a DING in my career.  I am not too fond of my company anyway...and have been wanting to leave for sooooo long...but now I am trapped.

What are the odds of some company taking a chance on me and hiring me?  Or should I even bother?  Should I just wait until I am on maternity and look then?

  • One of my best friends was laid off when our company cut half our staff. She was about 20 weeks. It took her about a month to find a new job but she did get hired and they decided to pay her for her maternity time (6 weeks) like she'd been there the entire time so it's possible.

She really likes her new job now and says she is much happier. If your truly unhappy then start looking. You never know what might happen.

  • Ehh.. I hate to say it, but if you think they would cut you as soon as you are back, they might.  I believe we are still at the same place, and it happened to a friend of mine last year. I think she lasted about 3 weeks after she came back. :(

I'd begin a preliminary search now, but if you want to wait til you're on leave and then look, you could - that way you can have the time to actually chase a lead.  There may be some law about leaving while out on FMLA that I'm not thinking of that good impact you, though.

    Good luck!

    yuuup.  same place.

Yeah, I have begun to search.  Thinking about going back to California...northern, that is.  I might just have to move out there first and figure out how to move my family out later.  There are a POOP-TON of great jobs out there and the last time I worked for a company in that area, they really appreciated "family" and such...meant you were more stable and less apt to make moves.  Just...a) I don't like earthquakes and the way things have been rockin' and rollin' up the pacific coast....eeeeewww, and b) home prices out there (been lookin' just now)...though, I would probably rent at first...

  • It doesn't hurt to look, but I'd probably stay put.  Usually to get paid during mat leave, you have to come back for atleast one day to two weeks.  If they let you go during that time, then well, you got your paid time off and should get some sort of severence package too.  Plus if you line something up while on leave, you can take the severance as a nice little bonus - something you would totally deserve after sticking it out another couple of months.

    So sorry work is sucking!
