Pedi - Question

Your LO sees a pedi in the hospital, but was it the one you picked before you went into Labor?  Some ladies I have spoken with said their's came to the hospital... The Dr. we are using is near Willowbrook and I am delivering in The Woodlands, the dr isn't driving up there.  Do I need to find one in The Woodlands for the hospital and then switch?

TIA

Re: Pedi - Question

  • We delivered at St. Lukes, the pedi we chose doesn't see patients there, but when we met w/ him before hand he gave us the name of another Dr. who was a good friend of his.  He said to put her name down on our paperwork so we didn't have to see the on-call Dr.  (Both our pedi and the midwives/OBs said the on-call pedis tend to be much more cautious/alarmist.)  When we saw her, we just told her that our pedi recommended her.

  • We just used the on call pedi with both kiddos.  Our pedi is in Willowbrook area and even though I delivered DD at Methodist Willowbook, our pedi practices out of TCH (not Methodist).

Most people just use the on call.  If you don't have unusual circumstances surrounding the health of the baby, I would just use the on call pedi.

  • Our pedi doesn't work with the hospital I delivered at.  I informed my OB and he chose a pedi that he knows and trust that works at the same hospital.  We had the same pedi see both kiddos at the hospital.

Ditto this.  I only have one kiddo but both of my sisters also used the same in hospital pedi.

  • Our pedi came to see DD at the hospital, but she was also a personal friend and made a point to do so. No biggie if the on call pedi is the one you see.

  • With DD, the pedi I chose came out to see her.

With DS, my pedi did not have privledges at the hospital I delivered at. My OB recommended another pedi for me based on what he knew about me and I was happy with that choice.

  • It's been a long time, so forgive me if this is incorrect, but are you charged a doctor fee for the pedi who sees your kiddo in the hospital?  The only thing I would be concerened about if so is if the on-call pedi would be an in-network doc on your insurance.  If that is the case then I would be sure to find one who is in-network to come check them out.

  • Yep, she came up every day instead of just the one visit. L was in the NICU for the duration of our stay, though.
  • We chose a pedi that has privileges with the hospital I delivered in. Maybe that's the difference?

  • Basically if your doctor has rights to practice at that hospital, they will be the ones to come see your little one.   If they don't then, like the other ladies said, you can either choose the on-call pedi or choose a doctor that has privileges at the hospital you are delivering at.

My pedi's office has 4 doctors, unfortunately you can't choose which one comes see your baby, you just get who is on call.   Now that I am thinking about it, that could be a HUGE problem in the future if we have another child because there is one doctor in the practice that I DO NOT get along with at all.   Hmmm...may have to look into finding another pedi next time I get pg, just for the hospital.   :)
