Bears and Monsters

My three-year old has recently been waking up several times at night, afraid of the bears and monsters she believes are in her room.  I have to work in the morning, and loss of sleep is taking its toll on me.  How on earth do I help her get through this fear so she's not keeping us up all night?

Re: Bears and Monsters

  • A lot of 3 y/os go through fearful phases.  It'll pass.  I'd just keep reassuring her (we sing "there's no such thing as monsters" but that doesn't really work with bears!).  Ask her if anything will help her feel better, maybe a flashlight or nightlight or a special toy?

  • get a small spray bottle and fill it with water....give it to her and tell when she sees monsters and bears spray them with special water to make them go away.  I did this with my oldest.  Ditto a special flashlight too.

  • For Muffin, it was witches and monsters. We told her that our dog was a specially trained monster/witch Springer Spaniel. Then, I made a sign that said "STOP! No monsters or witches allowed!" and told her that there's a little known rule among witches and monsters that says that they can't go in room with a sign even if they do manage to get past the family dog. Works for Muffin.
