Putting LO down while still awake

After DS was done eating today, he played awhile with his auntie (OK, looked out the window lol).  Anyway, he was in a very calm mood and started to yawn, so I decided to try to put him in his bed while he was still awake to see what he would do.  I stayed in the room with him (out of sight).  Well, he ended up falling asleep in a few minutes without making a peep!

I think that it's OK to do that, but I wanted tosee what others are doing and make sure I should continue.

Re: Putting LO down while still awake

  • It's definitely OK to do that - it's actually preferable sometimes because if your baby wakes up, they are in the same place where they fell asleep, so the theory is they are more likely to be able to put themselves back to sleep instead of crying.

We try to do this as much as possible - sometimes it works the first time, sometimes it takes a few tries.

  • I try to do this.  I'll put DS in his crib, turn his seahorse and sleep sheep on and listen.  If DS gets fussy I will go in and rock him to sleep before putting him back in his crib.  A good majority of the time he just puts himself to sleep.
  • I always put LO down awake. She only fusses if there's a problem like wind or nappy.

If she seems to be having trouble settling, and being a bit fidgety then I'll often just be in her room and do things eg. fold clothes, so that she can see Mum is still there.

  • Awesome! My DS will only sleep in his crib at night. Naps are still in the swing or boppy (supervised, of course) so that is great!
  • thanks!  I will continue every opportunity I get :)
  • I was listening to a baby sleep "expert" on a podcast the other day and she actually recommended laying a baby down while they are still awake but sleepy.

Here's a link to the free podcast, it was interesting to listen to

i've been doing this since he was born.  sometimes I cuddle him alittle bit before putting him in his bed and he's kinda of falling asleep.  But most of the time he's wide awake, I put some music on and he crashes out.
