Dumb question re: position of baby

So, if all is going well and you don't get an ultrasound after the 20 week mark, how does the doctor know the position of the baby (i.e. head down, breach, etc.) closer to your due date?

Are they able to tell just from feeling your stomach from the outside?

Re: Dumb question re: position of baby

  • Yep they can tell by pressing on your abdomen where the head, back and tush is.

  • Wow, this amazes me for some reason :)  And also makes me now irrationally paranoid that they will smush the baby's nose! :)

  • The baby's nose will be just fine - a baby in utero is squished anyway. Just be sure to empty your bladder before the doc attempts this

    Wink

  • LOL!  I was wondering about the same thing.  I guess it takes  experience to be able to tell.  I'm 26 weeks and when she is doing gymnastics in my tummy I can never tell if the bulge is her tushy or her head.

I'm trying to figure that out too. At this point all I can figure out is where the feet are and sometimes where the hands are. Kicks feel different than punches. :)
