Fluids making me nauseous

So, the morning sickness has kicked in!   I only had to go to the bathroom once (Saturday evening), but I think it was due to the prenatal vitamins on an empty stomach.

Anyway, I am feeling quizzy all the time, and don't really want to eat anything with fear of having to go tot he bathroom.  And when I drink any fluid (water, Sprite, juice) I feel like I'm overfilling my stomach, and sorta gag!

I want to stay hydrated and drink my water, but can't!  Any tricks?

Soda crackers are a no go!

Re: Fluids making me nauseous

  • Ugh morning sickness. I didn't really have it with Quinn but definitely had it this time around. Do whatever you can to drink your fluids though, even if you have to do little sips all day long -- water is so important because you don't want to end up dehydrated (especially if you are getting sick). Ginger ale with real ginger worked well for me, as did tea with ginger. I ate little amounts all day long to help with the queasiness -- saltines, bagels, and, believe it or not, protein. If you find that you can't eat anything without getting sick, call your dr. For a while I had a hard time keeping anything down and the nausea was making it impossible to function so I went on Zofran for a few months. It worked wonders.

    Hope you feel better!

  • I had toast for breakfast yesterday, and it didn't set too well.  I was waiting on DH to eat when we went out to the family's house, but DH was quite hungover from Sat evening, so we didn't leave until super late!  So, basically, I skipped lunch.  There was nothing to eat at the house, at least nothing that was appetizing.  I must have circled the kitchen 10x looking for something.  Finally when I got to aunt's house, and ate, I felt great.

But I was trying to drink my water, and that didn't go so well.

I do like the idea of small sips during the day.  Just served my first glass for today.  I also think it helps with it being extra cold.

  • When I was pregnant with Abraham I never actually got nauseous (with the exception of plane rides---didn't know I was pregnant yet though). Anyhow, for some reason I HATED water. My entire pregnancy I just dreaded drinking water because it would make me want to spit it back out. I just drank it anyway and sometimes I added a crystal light in there so it was bearable. GL! Btw, since you're expecting double, maybe the nausea is worse?

  • ps. and milk. I LOVED milk (I mean, I've always loved milk, but when I was pregnant all I wanted to drink was cold milk and eat cereal for dinner). Random, but maybe for breakfast you can try eating cereal?

Girl, I was telling DH that on Friday!  I really hadn't drank milk since last summer.  My acupuncturist told me that the milk created a more hostile environment for conceiving, so I gave up all dairy!  Anyway, since Dec, I have been drinking some, but had gotten used to no drinking any.  Well, all of a sudden, I want milk!  I have had a least a glass a day!  LOL

I told Dh to go buy some at Costco today (they have a 3 pack of the organic milk at a great price). LOL

  • I have to be careful not to drink water too fast; that always makes me extra nauseous. I read that drinking small sips and not drinking from a bottle or straw is supposed to help. I drink from a bottle all day long because it helps me keep track of how many ounces I've had, so I'm not really following that advice. :( I've thought about crystal light, but haven't tried it. Maybe that will help?

Like Mrs.ClariC, I am LOVING milk. Mmm!!! I can't get enough of it.

  • I don't have any advice but I hope you feel better soon :)
  • I had really bad morning sickness.  Mulitgrain cheerios were my best friend. They are loaded with vitamins and minerals and they were one of the only things I could eat and hold down.  DH and I also joke that I went on the baked potato diet for about a month in there that's all I could eat for dinner.  I know drinking is hard, but keep sipping.  A waiter (while we were out celebrating our anniversary) actually recommended for me club soda with a splash of sprite.  It worked wonders!  I couldn't tell you why, but I drank more when I used a straw so it might work for you too.

If it's bad, don't hesitate to tell your doctor.  I waited so long and once I got a prescription for Zofran I became a totally different person.  It was the wonder drug.

Oh, and if you are liking salty food, try some mini pretzels in your drawer at work.  The more frequently you eat, the better the nauseous feeling is. I know it's hard, but try to never let your stomach get empty.  Plus, the salt will make you thirsty and you should drink a lot more.

  • I did not care for water with Sophie but lived on Gatorade and Ginger Ale. If too much makes you nauseous then sip a little at a time and drink it gradually over the course of the day. Actually, I would add Ginger Ale to my water sometimes to add the flavor, too, so I could get more water. I am not a cracker person....but I love bread. Any kind of bread or roll.

Also, try to have nuts or peanut butter. The protein in the nuts helped me feel fuller longer....which kept the nauseousness at bay.

I was not really bad with the morning sickness. As long as I was not hungry....I was not nauseous.

    HTH!

  • I experienced the same thing and drank lots of ginger ale.  And would sip water slowly.  Have you ever tried homemade ginger ale??  I would go to Lan's at Dadeland Station Mall just for the yummy ginger ale.  Another tip, ginger hard candies.  You can get them at Whole Foods.

  • I've had horrible morning sickness with all three of my pregnancies and for the first few weeks nothing nothing nothign appealed to me, like you even water made me gag!

Just find something that you like and don't look at the calories or nutritional value. I usually hate sweet drinks but the only thing that I could drink in the beginning was sweet tea with crushed ice. (just ice might be a good idea for you).

I didn't eat much in my first trimester but salty foods were my favorite too. I am usually a chocohalic but now can't stand the site of it!

    Good luck!

I loved milk while pregnant too!!!! I always joke that Nadia was a 9 pounder because of all the milk I drank and Pb & jelly sandwiches I was obsessed with. I would have a glass of milk and pb&J sandwich for breakfast, lunch and dinner if dh would've let me! YUM YUM YUM!

I had morning sickness from week 6 until like 11. It stunk. I felt like I was CONSTANTLY eating because the minute my stomach was a little empty I felt queasy. Then one day- I woke up and felt normal again! I hope it happens like that for you too as well!

  • Oh, yeah, ice (PP mentioned iced tea with lots of crushed ice). I've been finding that when I'm really nauseous but know I need to drink, sucking on some ice cubes helps.

Keeping your stomach busy is the key! Munch on healthy snacks and sip on water/ginger ale/etc. The peanut butter idea is really good as well!

  • My doc recommended ginger ale, peppermints, lemon (lemon candies or anything with a little lemon, maybe put a little lemon in your water), and pretzels.  What helped me the most was keeping a little food in my stomach all day by eating smaller meals throughout the day and a snack every couple of hours.  It's actually helped and I've gotten used to it b/c now a big meal will make me bloated and give me indigestion.  About the water, I was the complete opposite, I was craving water before I even knew I was pg.  I just felt so thirsty all the time and no matter how much water I had I didn't feel satisfied.  It's not as bad now, but I still drink a lot of water.
