BFing a toddler... am I drying up?

So I gave up pumping at work a couple weeks ago - DD still nurses as soon as I get home, before she goes to sleep, usually at least once at night and in the AM before I go to work.  On weekends I let her nurse on demand (which means like 2 nursings during the day).  Pedi said she was getting enough BM that if she didn't want cow/non-me milk during the day it was okay.

Well lately DD has been sleeping better and sometimes she only gets 2-3 nursing sessions a day.  And lately when she nurses she does a lot of tugging and pressing down on my breasts with her hands, almsot as though she is trying to squeeze out milk.  Sessions are still as long as before; usually she finishes and is happy but especially at night lately she fusses and wants to go back to the first breast again.  My boobs hurt almost as much as they did when we started BFing and I wonder if she is getting enough milk to be healthy.

And we have tried hemp, soy, cow, goat and even freezer stash BM in sippy cups during the day and are lucky to get her to drink 2 oz. all day.  She'll drink water until the cows come home but doesn't really like milk. Sad

  • Is she getting other dairy like cheese and yogurt?  If so, I wouldn't worry too much.

  • Have you thought of starting her on skim and gradually moving her to whole by mixing the two?  My SIL had to do this because my niece wouldn't take whole right off the bat.
  • i got mj to drink milk by making "smoothies" with plain yogurt and pureed fruit mixed w/ milk.

    Ditto this and Lotte.

  • Thanks all.

She loves cottage cheese and has that quite often.  We have tried the smoothies and sometimes she likes them (gets them maybe once a week into her tummy).  We give her cheese and yogurt, and I think her diet is very balanced, I just worry and hate the idea of her possibly ending up weaning.

  • Don't stress- she might be trying to get more also she might just be exerting her power/playing if you will.  I know that @ a certain age my E. sort of figured out the nursing thing and how my boobs worked, etc. and found it fun to "play" with them... sometimes toddlers need to learn nursing manners.

  • I only BF DDa few times a day too. Normally Mon- Wed I nurse her at 830pm and when she wakes at night, Thur- Fri we nurse for nap, bed and might wake up and on weekends I nurse for 2 naps bed and night wake. I know she's not getting the same amount but she seems happy with it sometimes she wants the other side ( only nurse on one side at a time) but most of the time not. She did go thru a stage where she would push on them and smoosh her face in them but that didn't last long. Just like the bitting stage I said no and if she hurt me I stopped the session for 10-15 mins. I hope your DD doesn't wean and this is just a phase. BTW I don't pump anymore either for about 1 month and I've been doing the above for 1 month with no signs of drying up.
