Knot in umbilical cord?

Hi ladies, I've posted this on the "High risk" board with no response...

I was wondering if anyone else has had a knot in the umbilical cord? I'm 10 weeks today and due to go for another ultrasound in 4 weeks to confirm if it is a knot or a cyst or just the way the cord was laying.  The nurse said it's pretty unusual to see a knot this early so I'm hoping they are wrong....

Anyone else go through their previous pregnancies? Going through this now?

Thanks...

Re: Knot in umbilical cord?

  • Hi,

I'm just a lurker but I do know something on the subject, so I thought I would reply. I am a labor and delivery nurse and we occasionally see what is called "true knots". The risk with a true knot is if the knot gets pulled tight it will cut off blood flow the the baby. Now that being said it is a risk but like the nurse said it is very uncommon to see it this early in the pregnancy. And although it is a risk I have seen multiple babies born with true knots and they are perfectly fine, heck my stepson had a true knot when he was born.

Being that you are 10 weeks I would hazard a guess that it was probably just how the cord was laying. What did the Dr. say about the U/S? Have they reviewed it yet? I hope that helps.

  • My first was born with a "true knot" and my whole pregnancy and labor was flawless and he was even born at home.  All should be fine :)
  • You ladies are fabulous!!! (I am going to stop Googling because it just made me feel so scared! HA!)   Thank you so much for your input, it makes me feel MUCH better!!

As for what the doctor said about the ultrasound, I haven't had the second one yet and the regarding the first u/s he just said what the nurse told me.

    : D

    Thanks again ladies!!
