My DD was only 20 months when I had my son, but I just kept telling her that mommy was going to go to the hospital to have the baby and that I would be home soon. Just keep reassuring that you'll see him soon..
She came to visit and honestly I hated being in the hospital and away from her.. I had my son c-sec on Friday night at 7pm, I went home Sunday morning at 9am.. I was dying to go home..
honestly, don't talk about it too much, At this age, kids can easily get upset if things are hyped in their minds. Sebastian was a bit younger, 2 years and 2 months, but I didn't tell him anything. He got somuch attention while I was gone that he was in heaven!
I told Diego that we were going to the hospital for the birthday of his little sister. He went that same same day to see us and the following day too. I was only two days in the hospital. Until this day everytime we pass by the hospital he remembers that he went to see us there for Sofia's birthday. Its amazing the memory they have.
I am reading along because my turn will be soon and am also nervous about leaving Sophie for days even though I am sure she will enjoy the time without me. LOL.

Just wanted to advice you to remind Nicky when he sees you in the hospital that nothing hurts! When niece saw her mom after giving birth, she freaked out and almsot started crying (I was carrrying her). We all reassured her that it was okay. Then when she gave mom a kiss and hug, she was fine.
Since niece slept at grandparents' house frequently (wkends) she didn't give it much thought as to what was going on. They took her often to see mom and baby, and she was golden. Plus, she had so much attention b/c everyone wanted to make sure she wan't being left out!

I told Sophia that mommy was going to the hospital to get her baby brother. She will come visit during my stay. Will he? That may make it easier. I am hoping that she'll be ok with it.

I remember asking my niece who was 3 at the time when the baby was coming and she would say "when mommy comes home from the hop-ital"
she just kept reminding her she would be home soon and that she would get to come to the hop-ital to see her
