High-Risk Pregnancy

progesterone shot?

Hi. I am not pregnant but I just went into preterm labor 2 weeks ago and had my daughter at 20 weeks. She survived for about 30 min. The reason is not known why this happened but my doctor said that next time I get pregnant he suggest I take progesterone shots starting in the 16 week.

I was hoping to hear about anyone who has or is currently experiencing these shots.

Thanks

Re: progesterone shot?

  • the march of dimes website has some good information about these. i had PTL with ds starting at 24wk. this time around i'm still contracting but far less than i did with ds and haven't had any cervical changes or bedrest. they have about a 40% success rate of not having a baby before 34wk from what i understand and so far they seem to be working in my case.

  • {hugs} I am very sorry to hear about your daughter :-(

I have a history of low progesterone....I did 10 weeks of the progesterone shots with my first pregnancy and the same with my current pregnancy. There was one pregnancy in btw that I lost and I think it is mainly due to my low progesterone at the time...I was not with fertility doc when we got pregnant 2nd time.

with my first pregnancy when I found it...my prog. was at ONE! the doc was baffled that the pregnancy was even viable, I was immediately put on the shots. After my m/c, I went back to RE because my hormone levels were so low that I wanted to be monitored.

good luck! the shots aren't the most comfortable in the world but they are doable...just keep a heating pad readily available!

  • I just started my shots today (at week 16 like your doc mentioned they would do with you) so I can't say if they are going to work for me or not. But, I sat next to this woman who had her first baby preterm and she is now 37 weeks pregnant with her second and getting induced next week!  So for her, they have been a miracle.  I am hopeful they will do the same for me.

I am so sorry about your loss.  Hugs.

  • I am very sorry for your loss.

I have been taking the shot since week 16, now I'm almost 31 weeks. My first pregnancy was early, 24 wks.  I believe with bedrest and those shots I have made it this far. It is totally worth it.

  • I've been on them 11 weeks now and have 8 more to go. I had my DD early and hoping this one stays cooking a bit longer!

  • I'm on them because my water broke at 24 weeks with my daughter.  I'll be 35 weeks tomorrow and only have 2 shots left.  I've been on them since 16 weeks.  I think the progesterone and modified bedrest have made a HUGE difference.
