Can you all help me figure out where to live?!

Hi ladies!  Sorry, I hardly ever post lately.  Between working full time, my commute and taking care of DD, I am going nuts.  When we moved to the area 3 yrs ago, I worked in RR and DH worked in Temple.  So we chose to live in GTown.  Now I work in S. Austin (right near Barton Creek Mall) and DH works at 183 and Anderson Mill.  I am going nuts with the commute and with the limited time I have with DD by the time I get home.  So we are going to attempt to sell our home and move.  The question is where?!

Lots of people I work with live in the Circle C area which we are considering.  Great for me but possibly not that great for DH.  I am trying to find an area that is more of a middle ground in terms of a commute for both of us but running into issues with school districts.  Any ideas?!  Anyone live near the Circle C area and commute to the 183 and Anderson Mill area?  How is it? I am super stressed over this!  TIA!

  • Lots of people talk about Millwood, which I think is Parmer/Mopac.  There is also Travis Country which I believe is still south, but more north than Circle C.

  • I work 183/Balcones Woods.  DH works at Mopac/Barton Skyway.  We're pretty much in the same boat.

Currently we live at McNeil/Parmer and I have zero commute and DH has a terrible one.  However, we're moving in June to Mopac/290.  So now, DH will have an awesome commute and I won't.  It came down to what hours we work.  DH will always have to get to/home from work during rush hours.  His hours are very traditional - and mine are not.  I could always avoid rush hour if I planned ahead.  So, we're moving near his job - and although I'm very far... Hopefully I won't have to sit on Mopac.

Have y'all looked in the Far West area.  I know there are some amazing homes back there - and that's pretty much in the middle.  DH and I would love to live in Circle C in a few years (but not until I'm ready to work less).

I'm sorry.  i'm giving no advice because honestly, I don't have any... DH went in circles looking for a good location for us both and couldn't find one in our budget... so south was the best compromise for our schedule.

  • Maybe a neighborhood off of 360? I know someone that lives in the Jester neighborhood and really likes it. It is a little more expensive than Circle C though.
  • I was thinking Far West as well. Isn't Great Hills around there too? We used to live at S. Mo-Pac and 360 by the mall, so I know how long it can take to get up and down Mo-Pac, but 360 is a little better after you get past Bee Cave Rd.

I would venture to say it's a lot more expensive.  We couldn't even afford to rent a house there when we first moved to Austin.  We looked in the Jester and Lakewood areas because they were so close to DH's office at the time.

Busted. He-he. This is my DH's pet peeve with me. He always calls me out on my use of language when things cost a lot more than what I make them sound like. For example, if something costs $59.99, I would tell him I spent $50 on it. Or I might say, sure, Red Robin is a little more expensive than McDonalds but it is sooo much better. LOL

  • We live in 78733 and love it. Its west of 360 off bee caves. Eanes school district but with lots more affordable homes than westlake. 15 mins to barton creek and prob 20 to 183

  • I was also going to suggest the far west area - you'll have some traffic on mopac but, honestly, it's not too bad. I don't know if you take mopac now, but it usually starts moving again after 2222 or 35th/45th.  your husband shouldn't have much, if any, going to and from work.

GL - your current commute sounds miserable.  :/

  • I'd check out Cat Mountain too (MoPac/2222)... Not sure what your budget is, but you might find a deal there and it should retain it's value really nicely.

We live in Milwood and like it a lot.  There are a few other Nestie mamas who live right in my neighborhood as well.  Here's a map of the area of Milwood I live in.  The schools are Austin ISD.  Some people are fine with that and some are not.  We plan to still be in this house when A goes to elementary school, and we may or may not move to RRISD later on, only becuase DH is fixated on his kid(s) going to RRISD middle and high schools.

I commute to 183/Cameron and it's easy peasy, but you'd still have a farther drive.  Mopac can get pretty backed up in the mornings once you get south of 183 unless you're getting on the road early, like before 8 AM.

Totally depends on what part of Millwood.  Much of it is in RRISD. The area you are in in Millwood is supposedly good schools in AISD, from what I have heard.  I taught for 8 years in RRISD, and I can honestly say that they are excellent schools.
