High-Risk Pregnancy

GD and exercise question

I have GD, but my #'s aren't out of control, I'm usually a little high if at all.   For the most part I have it under control w/the diet but on occasion I get #'s above 120 (which is what doc wants me under) 2 hours after lunch and dinner.   I need to start exercising the 1/2 hour/day.  I'm just wondering when I should squeeze this in to best help me get lower #'s after lunch/dinner..   My fasting # and breakfast # are always low.  So should I maybe get it in around lunch time so that it will hopefully cause my afternoon #'s to be less?  Or does it not matter when I do it?

Re: GD and exercise question

  • the way I understand it is that it needs to be after you eat and never before.  Also I thought that it has the most impact on the meal you just ate.  For me if I'm worried about a particular meal I'll eat and then go for a walk right after eating so that when I test (at the 1 hour) my number will be lower.

So if it's your lunch and dinner numbers it would probably be good for you to eat lunch and then exercise and take a walk after dinner.

  • I think it really varies.  For me I walk usually a short 5-10 minute walk before lunch, and then about 15-20 minutes after...another 5-10 before dinner but a longer around 45 minute after (I was also very active pre-pregnancy so not sure if that changes it)
  • On my days off work I walk about 10 minutes post breakfast/lunch and 20 minutes after dinner.  On work days I walk to work (about 5 minutes) and after dinner.

You need to walk right after meals for it to have an effect on your sugar levels.

  • I try to get some exercise regardless of before/after a meal, but if you need to lower numbers for a particular meal, you need to do the exercise after that meal.

For example, I had a really carby dinner the othe rnight, we took a nice 10-15 min walk, and my numbers were fine.

So maybe try a brisk walk after lunch and see if that helps...you can always do a walk after lunch and then also after dinner, to see what works best.
