3rd Trimester

Evening primrose oil

Anyone on here know your dosage? I have seen differing things on the internet and the bottle I got is pretty high. It says 1000 mgs 3 times a day, but it isn't meant just for pregnant women.

It's commonly used as a natural labor inducer.

OP - excuse my ignorance, are you really in your 34th week? And if so, why would you be trying to induce labor? I may be wrong but I wasn't aware of any other benefits of EPO during pregnancy.... Correct me if needed.

  • My midwife recommended 2,000mg/day ONLY once you're full-term (37 weeks).  After 40 weeks, she increases to 3,000mg/day.  And that's oral; she doesn't recommend the insertion route.

As for what it's used for, it is thought to act as a prostaglandin to ripen/soften the cervix.  It will not actually induce labor, but may help your body along.  My midwife says that of her patients who use it, almost all have avoided the need for an induction.

  • EPO will not "induce" labor it softens the cervix. Evening primrose oil acts as a prostaglandin, which ripens and softens the cervix. Same as semen you know from the fun way of doing the dirty! Big Smile

  • I'm not taking it until 36 weeks. You can begin taking it between 34 and 36 weeks to soften the cervix. It does not actually induce labor.

EPO doesn't induce labor, it *may* help to soften the cervix, but that's it. My MW said it doesn't matter how soft your cervix is, if the baby's head isn't there to put pressure on, you won't dialate anyways.

I take 1000 mg a day right now, but will be increasing to twice a day now that I am 35 weeks. My doula also suggested one 1000 tablet vaginally each night, but I am not sure if I want to try it or not.

OP I digress... I just read a little more on it and should have done so before I opened my big mouth.
So does this mean I can stop using my SO as a tool? Not that he's complaining or anything.... :)

Yes  My doula told me not to even worry right now because it could just cause cramping but if we get to 39/40/41 weeks and my doctor is giving me a hard time for any reason then we can start. My cervix is already soft though.

    Interesting to know. I hadn't heard about the cramping . . .

I hadn't heard that - I've been carrying super high and he was at +3 station, but I was still 2.5 cm dilated last time I had an internal.
