Breastfeeding

Only pumped 1 ounce in 15 min! :/

I only pumped 1 ounce from 1 breast in 15 minutes.  I got 2 ounces out of the other one.  This is starting to stress me out because my frozen milk supply is going down.  My LO uses 4 bottles a day and I'm only able to pump 2 while at work.  I know I shouldn't stress.  I just started taking Fenugrek.  I hope it takes affect ASAP.

 Anyone else experience this problem?

  • My supply does this every month before AF returns (about a week before). Fenugreek helped me a little, but give it a few days. I find I get the most milk after her middle of the night feed. Maybe pump then, or wake up and pump if your LO doesn not eat overnight (lucky you!).

Good luck and hang in there.

  • This is exactly what I am hoping to avoid when I go back to work. I am so nervous that I will not be able to pump enough at work and/or just barely be able to keep up with what she needs at DC.

  • How often are you pumping?  Is this a few hours after baby has eaten, or right after?  Is this while you're at work/away from baby or while you're home full time?  1-2oz is perfectly normal if you're bf'ing full time, and pumping a bit extra.  Many people find they can pump more when away from baby, such as at work.  For example, when I'm home, I can usually pump 1-2oz after a feeding to add to my stash.  At work, I can usually pump every 3 hours, and get 1-1.5oz from one side, and 2.5-3.5 from the other (so 3.5-5oz every three hours).  Since most babies eat about 24-25oz per 24 hours, this is about right for the time away from him...

  • I finally pumped during the day this weekend because I picked up my first shift back at work on Saturday.  Normally I was only pumping in the morning, but I get a pretty hefty amount after he nurses in the morning (typically around 8-9 oz but sometimes more).  I was nervous that I wouldn't get anything during the day.  I was gone from the house for about 6-7 hours and was able to pump twice, and I got 4oz and 4.5oz the two times I pumped.  Later that night, I pumped after I nursed him and only got about 1-2 oz.  I think if you are actually at work and your body hadn't fed the baby in a while, you may pump more.  I also brought my phone and watched video of DS playing on his tummy time mat on the phone while starting to pump because a friend told me this would help with let down and I think it did.

  • My DD is about the same age as your child. I too, took Fenugreek, but I noticed the biggest difference when I paired it up with Blessed Thistle. I would easily pump 6-7 oz every 4 hours or so. I have been working since DD was 4 weeks old, so I pump regularly while away from her, and when I am with her I make sure to nurse as much as possible. The other big tip I got, and made a huge difference in increasing my supply was to squeeze your breasts as you come to the end of oyur pumping session. Your boobs will make more milk if and only if they are properly emptied. If you are leaving little bits of milk in your breasts, then your body will not be signaled to make more milk. I literally would go back and forth from boob to boob and squeeze and massage it. Now I am to the point where I can't do that because I dont want to make too much :) Also, press the let down button (PISA) a few times during your session. It helps to keep stimulating the pumping.

The combination of Fenugreek, Blessed Thistle, and efficiently emptying my breasts is what led me to be able to pump more than enough for DD while away. I usually have extra to stick in my stash too.
