So I had it at the beginning of my pregnancy and was hospitalized a couple times because of it. It started getting better for about 3 weeks and I was only getting sick every other day or so.
Well the past week I started getting sick every day and the past few days it's gone back up to a few times a day.
I see a midwife and she says there really isn't anything else she can do. And my mom keeps pushing me to go see someone else (an OB) for a second opinion.
Should I really go see someone else about this?
Re: ? for ladies who had/have hyperemesis
are you getting dehydrated? If you are then yes they need to do something--- either hydrate you with IV fluids or give you something for the m/s. I still take Zofran even at this point in my pregnancy. Are you taking anything for the m/s? Is it keeping you from doing your regular day to day activities?
I just depends on what you can handle and how badly it's affecting your body.
I haven't gotten dehydrated in a couple weeks. I was hospitalized every time I was.
And I am still taking zofran, but it doesn't really work. But it works better than the other stuff(meds) we tried.
It hasn't kept me from doing my day to day activities the past few weeks but I feel like it may be getting bad again (which is why my family keeps saying go get a 2nd opinion). Last night and this morning I didn't want to even get up out of bed/off the couch. But I ate something else this morning so I feel a little more energized, but I'm likely to throw it up in an hour or so.
the most important thing is that you don't get dehydrated. Dehydration gets more and more serious the further along you get in your pregnancy. I'm sorry the Zofran isn't working.
At 17 weeks I wasn't doing much but laying around most days. Right around that time I was finally able to eat and drink enough to be ok, but I still wasn't doing much else.
If it gets bad though they can do other things like at home IVs (I had this for 6 weeks) or PICC lines, but you'd only go there if you really couldn't take care of things on your own.
I guess your midwife is probably right that there isn't anything else they can do unless you feel like you're not able to keep yourself fed/hydrated.
Thanks.
That's what I thought. I will just keep an eye on myself
Hopefully it will start easing up soon
Hi, I am in a similar boat. I was the worse at 8-10 weeks being sick 7-9 times a day. I really thought I was going to die and I had to keep going to work. It got better 1-2 times a day from weeks 15-20 but in the last month my sickness has risen again.
My dr like yours is saying there isn't anything he can do. I actually had horrible side affects from the Zofran and other drugs so I haven't been able to take anything. My Dr even sent me to a Gastro dr that specializes in pregnancy. That Dr basically said he had his arms tied but suggested that I try pepcid AC 2x a day when I am the sickest. He spoke with my obgyn who agreed I should try it. He said it wouldn't hurt the baby at this point and he thought maybe I just have a lot of acid that is fueling my hypermesis. He hopes that maybe I will be sick once or less a day. It won't cure the morning sickness but might help me function better. I went to CVS today to get the pepcid. Will let you know if it helps at all. Until July I spend my days drinking lots of gatorade and eatting popiscles to keep hydrated. I eat many small meals a day in hopes of keeping some of the food.
How much weight have you gained? No one believes I am pregnant because I have gained little weight since I had lost so much.
I second what the other poster said...the main problem is dehydration. I had severe HG and when I would get even a little dehydrated, it was the start of a downhill slope from there. Is it possible you are dehydrated, and that could be causing you to be sicker? You have to remember that being pregnant you need more fluids then before, so even if you're able to drink it might not be enough to keep you fully hydrated.
I eventually had to have a picc line inserted with home health care when I was 16 weeks pg...that lasted until I was about 25 weeks and I was getting a little better. For me, the picc like was a miracle because I was constantly in and out of the hospital. I took zofran/phenergan and tried reglan, but nothing really helped except constant hydration. When I was fully hydrated, my meds worked better. I don't know how far a midwife can take things, but if you're still losing weight/getting dehydrated it might be time to seek out the partnership of an OB. Can she refer you to one she knows? That way when you are better, you can switch back to midwife care?
I'll be thinking of you. It's a tough road for sure, but our babies are worth it
I'm sorry you are in the same boat, but glad as well that I'm not alone!!
And please, let me know how the pepcid works.
I actually have a pretty big bump, but this is my second pregnancy. But I am still down 7lbs from prepregnancy weight
I lost a total 10-15 though.
Thanks. I have ketone strips that I was using to check but I haven't used them in a few weeks since I was feeling better. But I will start checking them again.
And I am drinking fluids but it's still probably not as much as I should because the more I drink the more sick I feel. That's a vicious cycle in itself.
My next appointment if I'm still feeling real bad (or if I start feeling worse) I will ask my midwife for her opinion on who else to see.
ETA: Oh yeah, we were actually getting set up for home health but when I started feeling better I decided not to. I'm actually pretty scared of getting a PICC line and such
