Austin Babies

AW and a ?

First my AW: My "I guess my baby just isn't a roller" girl rolled back to belly last night (in her sleep, but still)! w00T!!!! Once it clicked I guess it really clicked, because we found her on her stomach at 10:30 p.m., 3 a.m., 6:15 a.m., she rolled while I was un-sleep-sacking her, and again in the 10 minutes it took for me to finish getting ready. YAY!

Now my ?: When I looked at the video monitor at 3 a.m., she was on her stomach and totally face-planting into the mattress. Not something normal like face to the side. No, her forehead/nose/mouth were straight down into the mattress. I made DH get up and go flip her over (which woke her up). I know a lot of kids are belly sleepers, and I don't really care how she sleeps, but I'm really uncomfortable with her doing a total face-plant while she's sleeping. Is this just something I'm going to have to get over? Should we just turn her head to the side as opposed to flipping her back onto her back? Do what we did and flip her over and risk waking her up?

Ah, new skills = new worries. Guess that's kind of the way it goes, eh?

Dear Bump: You suck.

Re: AW and a ?

  • DS was a tummy sleeper but I don't think (don't have a video monitor) he was a face planter. He was turn his face to the side to get to his thumb. Face planting would worry me too but I would just adjust her head and not flip her completely over. Adjusting her head probably won't wake her up.

  • Yay for Ali!! I know they say that babies know when they can't breathe and will turn their heads on their own, but it makes me very nervous too. I used to just turn ds's head when I felt he needed it. He always slept (and still does) so great on his tummy, I never wanted to risk waking him up by flipping him over.
  • Occasionally Logan  would do the face plant, but most of the time he would then move his head to the side on his own.  The first time I saw it I moved his head to the side, but usually, now I don't have to because he figured out on his own to move it.

    Yay for the roll!!!!

  • Audrey face-plants a lot.  It used to freak me out, but I just turn the monitor up really loud and make sure I can still hear her breathing.  As long as Ali has the head control to turn her head from side to side, I wouldn't be too worried.  (I know, easier said than done.)

  • M face plants sometimes (he's been a tummy sleeper since 3-4 months) and it freaked me out at first too, but he's doing fine.  If it worries you, I would turn her head rather than flipping over - it sounds like she would just flip right back.  Does she sleep with her legs tucked under and butt in the air?  That is what M does and the extra lift in the back gives more air circulation around his face if he is face planted.
  • YEA Ali!!! I knew that girl was a super roller in disguise!!

We'll talk about the "face sleeping" today.  Sydney still loves to mash her face into the anything that isn't open air space. : )

  • Yay Ali! Caroline face plants sometimes and we usually just turn her head to the side.
  • 1. I cannot answer your question until I point out that your new siggy pic is freaking awesome. Ack, I love her. So cute!!! And the shirt is great!

    2. Camy has recently developed a love for tummy sleeping, and I am SO GLAD! She naps like a champ now - woohoo! But I worry about the face planting as well.  If I see her nose-down, I just go turn her head. She usually sleeps through it.

    3. WAY TO GO Ali!

  • Way to go, Ali! As for the faceplanting, I think it's something that you have to learn to live with. Since she has full head control and can turn her head to the side if she couldn't breathe, it's not as big of a deal as it was before she was able to do that. The SIDS risk greatly decreases after 6 months. I know it's nervewracking. Alessandra likes to sleep with her face pressed into the bumpers. She's been sleeping that way for almost 5 months now, and I was able to get over after a couple days of freaking out. Good luck.
