Playroom - IKEA expedit girls

The IKEA expedit cubes look fantastic! I am trying to decide between 2 different setups for the Expedit storage cube units from IKEA.  The wall we plan on using is 15 ft long (8ft high).  Originally we thought we might do 2 of the (5 x 5) units side by side on that wall. With 2 set up adjacent, the total dimensions would be approx. 12 ft across and 6 ft high.

I just came across this setup with 4 different units;  some horizontal some vertical and with a bookshelf across the top for added height. I like the varietyt of the dimensions and the setup would be approx. 10 ft across x 6.25ft high.

which do you prefer? We have LOTS of toys but either will be a great storage solution.

  • The room in the second link looks gorgeous but we have even more toys than that and have this:

    Not as pretty but great!

Too busy to update the pics for now ... :)

  • I like option 2.  I think option 1 will just look like too much.  In lieu of the framed photos in #2, you could put bigger storage bins to house larger toys if you needed more space.  Or, a storage bench between the two side bookcases.

We're going to IKEA this weekend and I can't farking wait!

  • The room in the blog is gorgeous, but I think two of the first option would give you tons more storage space. We have one set of the 4x4 expedit shelves and they're awesome. I shove everything in there. :)

Okay, this is a good point. Two of the large units might be a little overpowering.

I don't think you can really go wrong either way, though. These are great shelves (we got ours used and they're holding up REALLY well).

  • We have the first one.  I think the second has a lot of wasted space, unless you want to have a tv in it.  Also would be more work to anchor.  I love ours we live in an old house and DS has a small closet.  It holds practically everything he owns.  We have no shortage of toys either.  I got metal bins at lowes that fit perfectly too if you don't want all plastic ones.  You can also get doors.  I have 10 metal 10 plastic and the rest open, and that looks nice and works well, since DS can access his toys on the open bottom shelves.
  • I should add there would be a decent price differential b/t the 2 options. The first one would be $400 (+ s/h) but would be 50 cubes.

The 2nd setup is a bit smaller so we'd only have 29 cubes + the large center opening but it would be ($270) With this setup I would probably get another 5 cube single row shelf and use it horizontally and get a cushion made for the top of it and use it as a reading bench with books underneath (saw that look online and it's super cute!)

  • I LOVE the look of option #2! We have been looking for some options for our new playroom and needed something to accommodate a TV and toy storage so that looks like it could be the perfect solution. The only thing I can tell is were they able to secure the top vertical shelf? It looks like it might just be "sitting" across the top and I'd want to be sure my monkey boys weren't able to pull it down. Looks like my DH will be making an Ikea trip soon for us. Thanks for sharing these ideas!!!!

  • Hey ladies, the playroom linked above is ours.  We LOVE it and to answer the question above, yes, the top shelf is attached to the two lower ones with screws and the entire unit is secured to the wall studs with bolts.  We are extremely careful about securing our furniture to the walls with our little ones.  Our long term plan is to put a smallish TV in the open area and have beanbags, etc.  All in time...
