Postpartum Depression

Is there a way...

to deal with PPD without using medication? I am wondering if I am suffering from PPD lately. I have an 8-month-old and I have been feeling depressed and anxious this week.

I am a SAH mom and that has always been kind of difficult, but I had been doing better until Monday of this week. After that, I have had a hard time sleeping at night( anxiety and heart racing) and I have just felt so sad and alone. I don't know if this is PPD or not since it came up all of a sudden but I don't won't to call my OB if I am just going to get prescribed medication. I am breastfeeding and worry about the affects on my baby.

Does this sound like PPD to you? Any of you dealing with it without medication?

Re: Is there a way...

  • I would do some research on meds.  Zofloft is definitely accepted as safe.   It does sound like PPD to me.  I am dealing with it right now without meds, but if it gets worse, then I will get meds.  Right now I feel okay.  Perhaps a little harried, but I do have three kids under the age of 6....

Sleeping is always my big concern and it is the first thing to show when my anxiety is going into full effect.  I am still sleeping, so I feel like I am okay.  I am monitoring it though!!!

I hope you feel better!  Psychologists can help you with cognitive behavior therapy.

  • your symptoms sound just like mine were.  i took a few different drugs that were ok for breastfeeding.

IMO, i think it's better to "be medicated" and happy and enjoy breastfeeding that baby than to go without in the name of "going natural" and suffer in other areas of you life.  i'm pretty crunchy granola but i think the meds definitely are a good thing for treating PPD.

Exercise helps, and it's natural.  A support group also helped.  For me, those things weren't enough - i needed those medications.  There's nothing wrong with that.
