Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Wow... so my DD using her Jumperoo

original post: https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/32345209.aspx

?

Alright, so I had no idea at all that posting a photo of Kirsten in her jumperoo would cause such a stir on this board.

I understand and really appreciate all of the advice and articles people gave me about why babies SHOULDN'T be in something like a jumperoo or exersaucer before a certain age. I also understand that they put these ages on the boxes for a good reason, so stupid parents like me don't get overly excited and "plot their child in a jumperoo."

However... we all have to realize that we will parent the way that we want to parent. I will do things for my child the way that I want to do them. Sure, this was something that could be potentially dangerous to a child. I get that, loud and clear. But I had her in it for no more than 5 mins. And no, I didn't put her in it because "she looked so darn cute."

Kirsten has shown me that she has amazing head control and she sits up in her chair (summer infant super seat) very well. Many mothers on this board use a bumbo, and their kids are flopping over in the chair or looking rather silly. We all giggle and think "gee how cute." Do we flame anyone for using the chair? or do we flame anyone for say using bumpers in their crib? Sure we discuss whether they are safe, but in the end, it is the parent's decision.

I put Kirsten in the jumperoo 1. because she has shown me that maybe she would enjoy it for a few minutes at a time and 2. i was sitting RIGHT THERE! I saw that she was very well supported. I did not "plop her in the jumperoo" and leave for the mall, or go cook dinner. I took a photo and then took her out within a few minutes.

For crying out loud, I have heard things about the Moby wrap being unsafe for a baby. Yet it is the FAVORITE carrier for baby by far. Do I flame? No, I give a mother the benefit of the doubt. Nothing is worse than being THAT mommy.. the one who always has the RIGHT answer.

We are all just learning here... what good does it do to make someone feel like they are the worst parent on the planet? It really doesn't do much, other than make you look like a complete jerk.?

I'm just a little offended by people commenting by saying things like "children shouldn't be in something like this. here's a link to show that i am so right about this statement."

If there is anything we HATE on this board, and we all do, is when people give advice in a poor way. We come here to feel like a community, not be knocked down or felt like a failure.

I wasn't able to breastfeed my baby, but when I post about formula feeding I don't expect to get articles tossed at me as to why the breast is so much better for my baby. I GET IT! I failed and I get that breast milk is so much better. But I had to make a choice and my baby is doing perfectly fine.

So how about instead of jumping down each other's throats about our parenting choices (unless someone comes on and posts about starving or shaking their baby) we just leave our comments to ourselves.

I appreciate the discussion and the advice... but really... I think I know right from wrong. And putting my baby in a toy for a few moments certainly was not wrong, in my eyes.?

I am pretty sure there are parenting choices that each and every person on this board makes that I would sit back and think, "oh man, i would NEVER do that!" or think "my pedi told me differently." or even better "THEY say you aren't supposed to do that," But I would never ever degrade a mommy for her choices... because they are hers and as a mother that is all we really have.?

  • Wow.  You're awfully defensive about this.

Someone asked if they were for babies "that young."   Your child is, what?  7 weeks or so?  The answer is no, they're not really meant for babies that young.  They're not recommended for babies under 4 months, and professionals in pediatric physical therapy said they wouldn't recommend using them until 6-8 months.

Do you want to do it?  Fine, whatever floats your boat.  In fact, I don't think I saw anyone flame you.

But yes, people do flame for doing developmentally inappropriate things (check out the rear-facing/forward facing posts on the toddler boards, for example).  They didn't flame you here, so cool your jets.

  • 100% agree. I saw your post from earlier and I'm sorry you got flamed. Your daughter is YOURS. And ultimately you know what's best for her. None of us would purposefully put our LOs in dangers way. I would be a little irked too. Kinda like having your MIL Tell you that everything your doing is wrong and they know what's best, always.
  • LOL, that was mostly my fault. Sorry.  I so agree with the reasons you just stated.

BUT> Did you notice the difference in the comments that you got by posting during the day than I got when I posted the night before?!?!?!

And, you're LO looked adorable!!!!!  So glad she enjoyed it!

  • i was gonna post a picture of my LO in her jumparoo today under your previous post, but i figured it was a lost cause.  i agree with you.  my LO has good head control, sits in her boppy pretty good, and she loved being in her jumperoo for the whole 10 minutes she was in there for.

here's a pic of my LO in her jumperoo today: (i hope it works)

  • Don't be upset by what others say.  You know your baby best, and if you think she was fine, that is all that matters!

did you not read the same post as I did? They most certainly did flame her....  No need to rehash that they are not meant for 7 weekers (your opinion) again..... we got it loud and clear

I did read the same post you did.  OP did not get flamed. Some responses to one of the responders got a little warm, but it was nothing like a flaming.

Whether you like it or not, age recommendations are what they are (my jumperoo has an age recommendation of 4+ months) for good reason.  Sure, part of it is so the manufacturers don't get sued, but part of it really, honestly has to do with developmental appropriateness.

I will not flame someone for choosing to use a device/piece of equipment/toy that is outside the range recommended by the manufacturer, but when someone says "oh, I didn't realize jumperoos were meant for 7 week old babies" - the final answer is, "they aren't."

Just saying: but I have the exact same jumeroo and NO WHERE on it does it say 4+ months.  In fact, after the orginal post I double checked.  It says babies with good head control and can support themseves.  Which seems to be her LO according to her post.

So hers does, but the average 7 weeker doesn't.

So it would still not be recommended for your typical 7 weeker.

Like it or lump it, it's inappropriate for most babies that age.

And please note, I never said anything about her child specifically.

    ?

I'm not being overly sensitive, I just wanted a chance to give my side, since I never did respond in the original post.

And in no way was I being as rude to the people who were rude to me... I feel like I was actually a lot nicer than I could have been.?
