Do twins switch positions?

At all of my ultrasounds, the doctor and tech have always pointed out Baby A and Baby B.  As they explain it, A is always the closest to the cervix.  I was telling my friend that DH felt Baby B kick him for the first time the other night, and she asked how I was sure it was B and not A, and "don't they switch places all the time?"  I assumed it was B because the kick was way up high and to the right, but it got me thinking--do they move from left to right, or stay on their own sides of the stomach?

Re: Do twins switch positions?

  • Mine have stayed on their own sides the entire pregnancy, but mine are must likely fraternal.  I think switching sides is more likely for indential twins that share a sac.

  • Mine are fraternal and have stayed on their own sides.

  • Okay--makes sense, thanks!  Mine have their own sacs so I'm guessing they'd stay on their "own" sides too.  Although my doctor is still not 100% sure if they're identical or fraternal--he thought if they showed as b/g that it was be a definitive answer...now he's not sure.
  • mine are fraternal too and have not switched sides yet.  Our boy is on the left and the girl is on the right.
  • I asked the u/s tech this at my last u/s and she said that fraternals seem to stay on their own sides but identicals in the same sac they could switch spots.

  • Mine all stayed in their "zones" (lower left for A, lower right for B, up top for C) but they'd move enough within their zones that i couldn't tell who was who. particularly C, because he'd go from transverse to vertex all the friggin time.

  • Mine are fraternal and according to the u/s tech she said they would stay on their own sides. I do feel kicks all over but assume it's just because they're flipping up and down.

  • Mine have their own sacs and placentas- A has been tucked into my lower left hip the entire pregnancy- and be had been feet down on my right side...I wasn't having a lot of movement on the right side and got concerned.  Turns our right around 20 weeks B moved to be vertex.  So my left side is getting a lot of action with 4 little feet!
  • At my 12 week MFM ultrasound they showed me which twin was which, and I asked if they will stay in those positions and they said yes. When I went back in at 19 weeks, they found out that they had switched positions. But they said they won't switch anymore now. I didn't even know that twins could do that.
  • yes, mine switched!!! it was later in the pregnancy-- maybe 25 or 26 weeks. it wasn't like they flip flopped either. both babies were near the exit and it just so happened the one baby ended up taking over the spot of being #1 to the exit. we do not know if they are identical or fraternal, but they did have separate sacks and placentas. most likely, they are fraternal. we had decided baby A was going to be Audrey for obvious reasons and then that baby B would be Hailey. i was so used to calling them by their names that when the technical switch happened, i switched their names too.
