Why a reclining highchair?

DH and I found a high chair we like (Boon Flair) but it does not recline.  Why is reclining necessary? (Just so we know what we'd be compromising if we bought it.)

TIA

Re: Why a reclining highchair?

  • We have the Svan, it doesn't recline and we are fine. But DS has been sitting up on his own pretty well for a few months now.

  • I think its so you can have them in it before they are sitting.  I started cereal at 4 months and it was nice to have it slightly reclined because she couldnt sit on her own.  However, I do not think that it is a necessity.....If you need to feed before they are sitting totally and it isnt working out in the highchair yet you can always use the bumbo. They don't like you feeding them solids yet if they don't have good head control or anything...so you wouldn't need something that lays back or anything anyway.   If you like that highchair go for it.

  • some people start solid food earlier than others...regardless, when you start baby on cereal there is a good chance that s/he won't be sitting up 100% comfortably, so you'll want baby in a relaxed, reclined position.  I always fed my babies at first in a bouncy seat. MUCH easier in my opinion.  And then once they were bigger I'd put them in the high chair.  So, if you're like me-you won't need the recline feature!
  • our high chair is on wheels and we use it for more than feeding sometimes he sits with us at the table while we are eating sometimes we'll bring it into the living room as a place for him to hang out and he has fallen asleep in it so you can recline it back and he takes his nap like that.
  • I have never heard of a reclining high chair. :/

We just use my old highchair that my parents saved, and DS certainly isn't having issues despite a lack of reclining option.

  • Both our girls are in stokke tripp traps (they grow with the child instead of getting a booster seat) and we never had the recline or a tray and never missed either feature of a traditional high chair.  I also prefer that it's all wood since we don't have a washer/dryer and the cushioned chairs look like they'd need to go in the washing machine after every meal.

  • I love our boon highchair!  It is so easy to clean, (tray gets put in dishwasher) and ds loves sitting in it.  We have never had a need for it to recline so that has not bothered us at all.  I also like how the seat can be raised or lowered.

ETA: I should had we started solids a little after 6 months, and ds is breast fed.

  • Our's reclines.  DS likes to recline a bit when he is drinking his bottle.  It was nice when DS was getting 8oz bottles and had a hard time holding it up while he drank.

I am tardy to the party, but this is the same for us. DS has been sitting for a while, but can't tilt his head back to get all the milk, so the recline helps. Could we live without it? Sure.... Do I really like that we have it? Oh, yeah.

  • We recline for him when he's drinking from a sippy cup.

yes, it saved me from at least an entire month of holding his dinnertime bottle.  it was too much for him to hold upright, but in the recline he was fine on his own.

  • We have a reclining highchair and used it a lot when DD was 4 months old. We started her on solids (cereal) then. We also reclined it when she was learning to drink from a sippy cup. It was easier for her to drink out of it when she was reclined. Now the only times we recline are when I'm cleaning the kitchen and she's hanging out in her highchair watching me.  But honestly it really isn't a necessity (sp?) it's nice to have but you'll live without it. GL!

  • We have on that reclines, sometimes lo will hold his own bottle it makes it easier if it?s reclined. Also it made it a lot easier starting a sippy cup until he gets the hang of it.
