Infertility

Clomid

My husband and I conceived in Sept 2008 on the third month of trying. I miscarried in Nov 2008. We've been trying ever since to get pregnant again. It's been about a year now. I spoke with my OB on Wednesday and he is starting me on a low dose of clomid. He said we would try this up to 5 months. Once I did a little research, I found that OB's generally monitor you while using clomid. My OB did not mention this. He also didn't do any bloodwork beforehand. He said he didn't think the issue was hormonal. I believe I do ovulate every month. Now I'm just confused as to why I'm not being monitored monthly. Is this normal? Thanks for any help.

Re: Clomid

  • actually many OBs do not monitor you.  My OB did some monitoring meaning one u/s around day 14 and a blood draw on day 21.  Not nearly enough.  If your OB won't do the proper monitoring then you should move to an RE who specializes in infertility.  Actually since you have been trying for over a year you should move on anyway.  I am sorry for you loss btw.

  • I agree with PP, you should be monitered closely with any infertility drug. I would also suggest finding an RE that will monitor you, especially if you are pretty sure you are ovulating on your own.

  • It seems odd that she would give this to you without the proper work up but I was just (today) prescribed Clomid too and am not having any monitoring while taking it.  Maybe because I'm OOP?  I am just being prescribed it by the regular gyno and haven't seen an RE yet.  I was told to use ovulation predictors though and continue to chart.  Also I had a bunch of blood work done before so I don't know if that helps or is more confusing.  Sorry.  Good luck though.
  • I would decline and instead agree to undergo testing: blood-work for thyroid, FSH, E2, etc. then have an HSG and have your DH do b/w and SA. From there, get a referral to an RE.

OB/GYNs are known for handing out Clomid as a fix-all. But, the thing is that Clomid might do nothing for you depending on what you issue is. Why go through the mood swings, the increased risk of ovarian cancer (you only get so many lifetime cycles of Clomid because of this), increased chance of ovarian cysts, developing extra follices that could increase the chance of multiples, extra months that might be spent futilely?

It sounds like your gut is telling you this isn't the right strategy, and I think most REs would agree. You should be monitored on Clomid, but more importantly, you should have a treatment plan that reflects a diagnosis.

Firing one doc who refused to refer me or do diagnostics and getting a new doc to refer me to an RE was one of the best decisions I've made in a long time.

    GL to you!
