One of my bf's is a L&D nurse. She told me this morning there are a lot of pregnant ladies who go into L&D faking contractions. I asked how do they do that and how do you know? She said the ladies will push their stomachs out and act like they are having a contraction, but the monitor shows they are not. She said if you are close to 40 weeks this is a sure fire way to get the OB on call to go ahead and induce you if you have had some progress. I just think this seems extreme. My friend said it makes them mad, because the ladies are trying their best to get in for an induction which usually turns into a cs. She said she will ask them to walk down the hallway to see if they can get things moving along before they start the induction process. This is funny to me, but she said that when some of the ladies arrive, they can barely walk or talk, but as soon as the nurses tell them that, they are trucking it down the hallway like they are running a marathon. Just thought I would share this cute story with you all.
Re: faking contractions
Some people are so stupid. Those women deserve to have rough labors. It reminds me of girl who posted a few weeks ago about faking decreased movement in order to recheck the gender. I know I sound harsh, but I am overdue and won't be induced unless for medical reasons until Saturday. And I don't want to be! If this baby is fine, I can deal with no sleep and heartburn and swelling and pain.
I went to L&D last Monday and I think they thought I was faking. I was having timeable contractions at home for a few hours, but once I got to L&D they all but stopped. I was so embarrased.
I told DH I only want to go back if my water breaks or if I am in serious pain.
yea...l&d is no fun. i had a short stay when i had a stomach virus that caused me to get dehydrated. i still have the scar/blemish from the dayum iv that had my wrist bruised for over a week. i'm not going back til this baby is really ready.
When I was on the Bump when pregnant with dd, if you mentioned anything (OWT) to help onset labor, you were flamed from here to England. If you were 39-40 weeks, maybe they wouldn't be so tough on you, but 37 or 38 weekers, they got it bad.
Well, I, for one, am glad things are different this time around, lol
I am SO ready to have her out!
While I was in L&D, I was hooked up almost constantly. Not really for contractions, since I was in for BP. One night, the nurses were hanging out in my room (yeah, it was pretty sweet...lol) and one of them was talking about this sort of thing... So I told them I'd try to set the monitors off on purpose.
All I did was tighten my ab muscles, and the monitor registered it as a contraction. They weren't super big hills or anything, but it definitely registered. They had to throw that tape away, because we all knew it was on purpose, but it looked like I was having serious action.
I guess I write this because I wonder... if I could manipulate the monitor that way, why couldn't/wouldn't these women who are trying to get induced? And/or, how could the nurses tell the difference? After I saw the tape of a woman who was going into labor, I could replicate the pattern almost exactly, just to a lesser degree. The nurses that were chillin' in my room joked that I should start faking contrax so I could hang out longer (I was released the next morning).
Of course, I would never do that to actually get medical care. We were just messing around because there were 18 billion nurses on duty, and I was the only patient in there besides one other lady who was in labor...
I definitely agree with you Aegrimm!
I could buy the whole faking contractions thing. When I was in L&D I was contracting every 2 to 5 minutes on the monitor and couldn't progress past 2cm so I got sent home but in triage there was a lady next to me who kept saying "OH here comes one and the nurse was like there is nothing on the monitor!"
That's insane! Now I'm convinced that they think I was faking. My contractions were just little baby ones
Ugh. I may have to switch hospitals. I can't show my face in there again.
But, in my defense, 2 days after I was in there (at 2 cm and 50%) I was at 4 cm and 70%...so SOMETHING was happening...
Is it really that weird? All I did was contract my muscles like I was doing crunches, and hold it... I mean, the next day I was sore, but at the time it wasn't that hard.
I am absurdly worried now though that because I played with the monitor, when I actually DO have contractions for some reason (karma?) they won't register and people will think I'm faking. :
I guess since the chances of me actually having many contractions during labor are so slim, it doesn't matter anyway...
wow.....yeah that's pretty insane!! though I have faked w/DH to get out of cleaning! I'll tell him I need a break and to lay down and drink some water to stop the BH when really I'm just tired and don't feel like finishing the laundry or whatever needs to be done!
But, I would never fake at L&D!! Plus I would like to avoid being induced at ALL costs!!
Shmoo is growing up!
