High-Risk Pregnancy

Found out today I have GD

What a disappointment. I found out today that I failed my 3 hour glucose test.

I am scheduled for a Diabetic Education meeting and a Nutritionist meeting tomorrow.

QUESTION: Does having GD automatically put you in the "high risk" category? Anytime I see any reference to GD on The Bump they say to investigate over on this board.

Also, I feel an overwhelming sense of failure. I'm tearing up at my desk at work thinking about how much I'm going to have to pay attention to numbers and testing...I already feel overwhelmed with all of the things I have to do - relating to pregnancy as well as my other responsibilities at work and at home.  I'm so tired, hormonal, and now I'm disappointed.   I just need reassurance that I can manage this too.

Re: Found out today I have GD

  • It is normal to feel this way.. I did all of last week.. I was just a downer when I found out that I also have GD.  Most importantly that I can suggest is grab the information from the GD Nurse, Dietitian, Educator, and so forth.  Information is out there about what you can do and it is overwheleming at first, but I have a feeling - just like everyone else has told me so far - it is doable.  You can work with it.

Start looking at your diet and your exercise plan - those are the first two to focus upon.  Checking your sugar level is not that difficult and it doesn't take a lot of time - just a few minutes each time.

I firmly believe in you!  You can do it!  ((Hugs!))

  • Welcome, and don't worry, it's not so bad!  I had a very encouraging dr. appt today, and she told me that they won't consider me "high risk" as long as the GD is diet controlled.  If your numbers are good, your body responds basically as if you don't have GD.  The best advice I can give is to eat protein with your nighttime snack.  It will help regulate your fasting number, which is the hardest to regulate.

  • Every doctor is different. Mine does consider me high risk, even though my sugars have been pretty well controlled. I think it just means my level of "attention" went up -  I now will get weekly NST's, biweekly endocrinology appointments, and have a biophysical profile @ 36 weeks. The sheer volume of doctors appointments I have had to make is a bit overwhelming, but comforting at the same time.  I know that I'm in excellent hands, and that the health of my LO has been made a top priority.

  • Thanks ladies. You are all so encouraging. I really appreciate all your advice.

    We can do this!

  • i certainly did my share of crying when i got my diagnosis.  And I'm not going to say that this is easy...I find it to be somewhat of a pain and can't wait for it all to be over.  But, it's a finite period of time, it's not because of anything you did, and you will get through it!
