GD related: curious, tested after a "cheat" snack and got very high #

Hi sweet mommies!

I've been doing awesome on my numbers so far with GD, and am only diet controlled.  I have to test 4 times a day (fasting, and one hour after each of breakfast, lunch and supper).  Well, today DH and I decided to treat ourselves to a trip to Barnes & Noble where we grab some magazines and get comfy and just read for a while.

Well, before GD, I would always treat myself to a toasted pretzel and a non-coffee (creme-based) frap.  I decided today to treat myself to just half a pretzel, and the frap, because my scheduled a.m. snack came about while we were still at B & N.  I only decided that because my fasting number was 74 and after breakfast was 101 (VERY good #s for me).  I decided also to be a good girl and test my blood sugar one hour after my snack, which I don't technically have to do, and haven't done before (for a total of 5 tests today instead of 4).  I should have known better, but I was shocked to see that my after-snack number was 184!

I haven't had lunch yet, and so by the time my after-lunch test comes about, my numbers could very well be back down to normal, and I never would have even known about my 184.  So was it good that I took that extra test, or did I give myself extra worry?  I suppose I'll answer my own question once I see where my after lunch test falls.  I mean, since I never have tested after a snack before, how do I know if every day my after-snack numbers are high?  (Altough this was an especially indulgent snack).

And last question... if that high of a number only pops up this once, is it still something I should be concered about and should I mention it to my nutritionist at my next appointment?

TIA!

  • Your number for 1 hour after is a little bit high, but I am supposed to test 2 hours after every meal.  I think your problem may have been not having any protein with your snack.  My snacks have to have the protein with them, because it somehow helps to balance out the carbs.  I do not know why, just read that online, and I was told to eat the protein.  I think you did give yourself extra worry, but it may also have been good to show you what your limitations were :D

If you are charting your numbers, which my office wants, then put in a comment next to that and have it mention the snack you had, and what the snack was.  My nutritionist said it was okay for it to happen occasionally, just to note why, and to try to avoid it happening again.  I wouldn't be concerned about it though, you know why it was high.

  • One high number isn't a problem, but I wouldn't have that snack again.  Could you try the frap in a sugar free version?  That might make a difference.  Sometimes you just have to cheat, don't feel guilty!
