High-Risk Pregnancy

My fasting # is high

My fasting # is supposed to be less than 95.  It's 108 this morning.

How do I get that number down?

Yesterday was my first day of testing but I didn't get my monitor until after breakfast so I didn't check my fasting # then.  All of my after meal #'s were in line.

Thanks!

  • That's not too bad.  Did you have a snack before bed?

  • Yeah, I had a couple sugar free fudge bars.  They were the small ones and that's why I ate 2.  I can have 15-30 carbs with each snack.  1 bar was only 10 carbs and 2 bars were 19 carbs - so I went with 2.

Maybe I should only have 1????

Or stick with a different snack???

I was so psyched after meals yesterday when my numbers were so good.  Amazing how 1 high number can be so discouraging.

  • my doctor recommended 6 saltines w/peanut butter and a glass of skim milk as the perfect nighttime snack.  You really need to have protein at night to regulate the fasting number.  It's not just about limiting carbs.  The fasting number is the hardest to control so don't get discouraged, just try a snack with protein (like pb or cheese) and see if it helps.

  • I used to do well with PB and a slice of toast or cheese and crackers - like the pp said the protein really helped!  My fasting numbers were always a problem. . .
  • Ditto everyone else.  You likely need protein with the snack. Try triscuits and cheese or because you don't like cheese, triscuits and meat of some kind or peanut butter.

  • Given years of experience having diabetes, the morning number is hard to control. They call it the Dawn Phenomenon, and numbers are high. 108 is not bad at all. Just keep track of it and let Dr know about morning highs, its common. I am pre existing diabetic, not GD and you really dont want to know what my number was. hang in there and just keep good track of everything.

  • Like PP said, you have to have protein. I couldn't get my fasting numbers down on my own so I am now on glyburide at night. (I thought 108 wasn't bad either but the doctor doesn't want it above 95 at all for fasting.) I found that I cannot eat anything with dairy in it for my evening snack and then I realized that bread was also making my numbers higher even with the meds. So now I've been eating peanut butter on crackers every night and my fasting numbers have been perfect. Also, pay attention to how long you are fasting. My nurse says its extremely important to only go 8-10 hrs and no longer.
  • Have a high fat/protein snack with carbs before bed...ice cream is perfect for this.  Also, if it stays high, consider having a glass of milk in the middle of the night when you get up to go potty.

That said, when I first started the GD diet my post meal numbers were always great but my fasting numbers were too high...so I was started on insulin.
