Follow-Up...Hyperemesis with TPN/PICC line

Thanks to everyone who replied last week. They finally put me on ST disability after complications with the PICC line. We started the TPN last Tuesday. My question is if anyones vomiting got WORSE on the TPN? For a few days a week and a half ago I was at least able to move around and now I'm back to pretty much 24/7 vomiting. We've talked to the nutitionist, OBGYN, and my home nurse. Tomorrow it looks like we're headed to the hospital. Any advice/words of encouragement from those who went through this? I'm pretty much on my last length of sanity between the vomiting and chest pain. Thanks (again).

Re: Follow-Up...Hyperemesis with TPN/PICC line

  • I don't think I responded to your initial post, but I read it. I had severe HE with my son, and had a picc line blah blah but I did not have TPN, only fluids. Are you getting fluids through your line also? For me, having the fluids helped me...and by that I mean I wasn't throwing up 2x an hour anymore...I think it went down to like 8 times a day while I was still very sick but with fluids. How far along are you? I was pretty much on the couch all day long super sick until I was 28ish weeks...but after that point, I went uphill fast and felt better by 31ish weeks.

What kind of meds do they have you on? Have you tried everything? Nothing really did much for me with the nausea, but Zofran and Phenergan together helped with the vomiting somewhat.

Sometimes being in the hospital is the best place. I had a handful of week-long stays while going through it, and honestly sometimes it just felt better to be there. Like I knew if I couldn't stop vomiting or things went downhill fast, I was being watched over 24/7. And they can mess around with your meds/tpn combo's and try new things.

Feel free to PM me if you want...like I said, I didn't have TPN, but did have a picc line and fluids for a good while. You will get through it, one day at a time.

  • I forgot to add- the chest pain is horrendous. I remember that clearly...it's from the force of vomiting so much. I used to have horrible upper back pain too while I was in the thick of it. If you can stand it, try using a heating pad on the area...I could only stand that for a couple minutes at a time, but it did help. And i don't know if this is a problem for you, but I'm assuming it is, my throat would constantly ache from the acid/bile/blood coming up...and slushies helped. I was lucky if I could keep down a few sips, but the consistency and coldness of a slushie felt good on my throat.
  • I had hyperemesis pretty bad.  Got a picc line which caused clotting.  Needless to say, it was the worst thing that they could have done.  I am now super high risk and on blood thinners for my entire pregnancy plus 6 weeks after.  It's a nightmare.  They put me on a course of steroids which helped to pull me out of the hyperemesis downward spiral.  Good luck and stay positive.
