Success after IF

does an IVF pregnancy increase risk of preterm labor?

I was reading on March of dimes and it says even and IVF singleton pregnancy can increase your risk for preterm labor (which is my biggest fear) I have never heard this before or read it anywhere else...anyone know if its true or had your doctor or RE tell you this?

If so are you taking PIO again? I heard this is something you can take to risk chances of preterm labor

  • I haven't heard this and I went to 41 weeks!

  • My OB said he is going to see me more often because he has experience with IVF babies going early. He said it was not a significant amount but enough to where he wanted to keep a better eye on me. Of course, if it were twins, we would be planning on it.

I would try not to worry about it too much. The technology today is amazing and these babies should be just fine. I just keep trying to think if my sister could be born at 25 weeks and at 1 lb 8 oz, 20 years ago and be just fine....these Docs have 10x more at their disposal today.

  • i must have read it on the same site as you when I was looking around..FWIW, i think the March of Dimes website is a bit of a fear mongering site in its efforts to warn people of every possible danger...it also had something on there about placenta previa leading to a higher chance of birth defects which had my DH in a tizzy of worry...but my doc had never ever heard of that before.
  • never heard of this...  my OB just said that they won't let me go more than a week over my due date, since there was no question about the date of conception.    they are treating me like any other patient.

my SIL had an IVF singleton and delivered the day after her due date.

  • I've heard of this before....but it is not like it happens to everyone.
  • Well I did IVF and I'm overdue, so who knows.

  • i had someone who did IVF tell me this too (to the tune of 18% more likely!!).... i don't know if there is any truth to this, unless it is a multiples pregnancy due to IVF...then that would totally make sense since IVF patients are more likely to be carrying multiples. but for a singleton? i'd like to see the studies.
  • We were told this by our peri, but I had never heard it from any other doctor.  The RE & OB both said IVF pregnancies are just like any other.  Our peri also said IVF pregnancies are more likely to result in pre-eclampsia & low birth weight.  I think he seemed like the type of doctor that likes to overly prepare you for the worst and.  We saw a different peri at our last appointment (who I liked much more) and I forgot that I was going to ask about these comments.  Our next appointment is also with a different peri in the practice so maybe I'll remember then.
It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

  • My RE told me this--before my IVF.  This i why he is very conservative, and likes to do SETs--because with twins it is even riskier.  My OB didn't know this when i brought it up.

I did have PTL at 34 weeks but was able to quell it with mag and bedrest.  We were just shy of 37 weeks when DD was born.  She had no problems.

We were told this by our peri, but I had never heard it from any other doctor.  . . . Our peri also said IVF pregnancies are more likely to result in pre-eclampsia & low birth weight.

Our MFM said this, too, but only after I directly asked him.  He said that the data wasn't clear enough to say whether the relationship (which is slight, anyway) is because of something related to the underlying cause of infertility, something related to the IVF process, or just the fact that IVF pregnancies have a higher rate of multiples.

That said, I am incredibly high risk and my MFM still preferred me do a single transfer IVF than IUI again, because he feels that multiples are the biggest risk factor for preterm labor and preeclampsia both.  (Sorry if that upsets anyone pg with multiples)  So - I think the IVF connection, if there is one, is slight.

  • I have never heard this...both my RE and OB said I would be treated like any other pregnancy once released from RE.  It doesn't make any sense to me why IVF alone would cause that...  sometimes when I hear these kinds of claims it makes me think it's more about some of the underlying issues that IVF patients have and not just the fact that the baby was conceived via IVF.

  • I have never heard of this before. I always thought/read/was told, that past implantation carrying an IVF conceived child was no different than that of anyone else.

I attributed pre-term labor to be more common in multiple pregnancies which are more common through IF treatment

  • My RE told us this at our IVF consultation but said it wasn't significant enough to worry about.

I did go into PTL at 24 weeks but there were a number of other reasons involved...slight infection, dehydration and constipated.  My OB later believed I had an IC on top of it but my high risk and another OB don't believe that was the issue.

I think that there is a higher risk w/ IVF babies b/c you have a greater chance for IC.  During the procedures leading up to the IVF...trial xfer, egg retrieval, possible previous IUI's....they all artificially open your cervix thus comprimising your cervix's ability to stay sealed.   My OB told me that for some women who have multiple procedures done you barely have to touch the cervix and it starts to give way.  Of course, this is not for ALL IVF cases so I wouldn't worry.  I think stressing over it will cause PTL more than IVF will.

  • My ob tried to induce me at 38 wks because I had hb. Nothing happened except my hb went awa. At 41 wks and 2 days ds finally arrived via unplanned csection. I bet he would have stayed inside alot longer if he had his way.

  • From what I understand, it is just a correlation, meaning that there isn't any research showing that IVF causes PTL.  It is more likely that some factors that may lead individuals to need IVF may also cause PTL.

  • I have heard this but I don't think that it is anything to worry about. I had a singleton IVF pregnancy and did have PTL at 29 weeks but it was because of my uterine condition not the IVF. They were able to stop it with Mag. Sulfate and I went to 36 weeks. Hayden was perfectly healthy and never stepped a foot in the NICU.
