Surprise-why didn't you all warn me??

I went for my 36 week appt. today. It was our first internal (yay) and also the strep B test. The doctor takes the culture for that, then says "And I need a swab from your anus too" and takes a culture from my butt-hole!!! She didn't even give me time to process what she was going to do-she just did it! She then tells me that she never tells her patients she's doing that b/c she figures they wouldn't let her. Um, darn right! I probably wouldn't have come to the appointment! Why didn't anybody warn me about this???

I got mine yesterday too; I knew I was getting it in the next couple of weeks but not yesterday

 I always say the GBS test stands for Gross Butt Swab.  I honestly never noticed the butt part, but I know it is done.  They have both been done so quickly that if I had no idea I don't think I would have known either way.

What?!  That didn't happen to me!  I got the StrepB culture, but that was it!  Yikes!

I don't understand... if they had warned you, you would have denied the test? And accepted the risk to your LO?

IT's weird because I hear about this a lot, but OB just handed me a swab kit and I did it myself in the bathroom. (They had an instruction chart on the wall - kinda like the ones that show you how to do a clean urine catch).

I was surprised by the booty swab too! The nurse did mention before hand where she would be swabbing...but that didn't ease my discomfort with the process one iota.

I have never heard of it before! I was just told it was the vag swab. I was VERY surprised...Lol.

I'm joking.  I actually forgot about that part of the 36 week exam.  Thankfully it's one of the easiest tests and it doesn't hurt.

I never even felt it when I had it done while pregnant with DS so in my opinion it is not a big deal...

sorry... They had me go to the restroom and do it myself... I can barely reach to wipe let alone properly stick a q-tip in my hole... I was hoping the Dr would do it for me!!

I'll go you one better.  First time I went to my mom's gyno, he finished the pelvic exam then said, "Quick check for hemorrhoids," and stuck his finger in my butt.  Now THAT I was not prepared for.

I got the GBS test but thought it was a vag swab. If it wasn't, I didn't even notice.

I'm pretty sure ALL GBS tests include the butt swab, but they dont usually (or at all?) actually go INTO the anus, so most people probably dont notice. They just have to swab around the anus.?

LMAO...oh my goodness this post just made my day. i tooootally forgot about the butt swab part, but my OB did it so quick and smooth that by the time i was like "whoa" it was way over.

my internals don't start until 38 weeks.

They swip it so quickly you can't even feel it!!!  I'm like the pp what's the big deal.  I think getting checked to see if you are dialted is much worse bc it can be painful!!

OK - so I get the part about wanting a little more than 2 seconds warning - but really, you wouldn't have gone to the appt or let them swab your butt?  You got a big surprise in store for you in L&D.  What if you tear into your rectal region?  Are you going to refuse stitches? 

She's a doctor, your pregnant, it's a butt...calm down.

I honestly don't know what she did! I was still trying to process the whole thing by the time she was done. My DH said my face was absolutely priceless! Lol.

Just wait until the birth.  There's going to be TONS of gross probing going on down there that is pretty hard to prepare for.  Think of it as practice.

I was already up spread eagle on the table so they just touched both areas with the swab thingy, no biggie, wasn't like they dug around in there or anything...

Needless to say that relationship was short-lived.  The annual exam is unpleasant enough without worrying about a doctor sticking his finger in your @ss.

My doctor told me id be getting this next week and did mention the anus part. I thought it was only on the outside though not shoved up in there lol.

The nurse warned me but when the doctor actually did it I didnt even notice because it was so quick.  I honestly could not imagine doing it myself...yikes!

LOL I could have written this exact post when I was pregnant with DS! I had the same exact experience. No one told me before, it was just like, surprise, here it is! LOL.
